Friday Fishing: Striped Bass Last Weekend

in fishing •  6 years ago

Over the holiday weekend, I managed to fit in a little bit of fishing for striped bass on the Colorado River!

I spent most of Saturday and Sunday on the boat with a bunch of family members, so I did not get any fishing time in until Monday. I took my son Jacob with me to one of my favorite striped bass fishing holes, and the spot did not disappoint.

We arrived at the fishing spot on the bank of the Colorado River at about 7:15am. Jacob played in the mud and sand on the bank, while I rigged up the fishing pole and got us ready. We were fishing with frozen anchovies, which is a favorite of striped bass.

We started out using the big pole and reel to try to find the big striped bass hanging out in the deeper current. Right away, I started getting “nibbles” by smaller fish. I call these smaller ones “bait stealers” as they grab on to the portion of the anchovy that does not have a hook and keep nipping and pulling until the anchovy comes free.

After trying for about 30 mins with lots of little nibbles, we did not find any of the large striped bass hanging around. So we went to plan B, which was to catch some of the smaller striped bass. We downsized our rod and reel, as well as the anchovies we were using (used halves or thirds of the anchovies), and quickly caught some of the smaller striped bass. We ended up brining in about 4 in the next 30 minutes, which we kept to eat! Here are some pictures:

We ended up leaving after about an hour and 15 minutes (8:30am) as it was clear we were only going to be catching the smaller striped bass and we had already caught enough for a meal for the 4 of us. Plus, Jacob was anxious to get back to the house for some reason, but I suppose that is the downside of fishing with young kids!

Jacob and I had a great time together, and I would trade a short fishing session with him for a long one by myself anytime. Also, he was still hesitant to touch and hold the fish, but I finally convinced him to hold the smallest dead one when we were back at the house… the only problem is that is ended up giving a final twitch while he was holding it… check it out!

That was a pretty hilarious moment! We ate the fish this week and they were delicious and fresh:

I remember going rafting along a stretch of the Colorado River a long time ago.

Oh man that twitch gif cracked me up! Looks like a great time and an awesome meal. Cheers!

Hehe, yes, it was pretty funny! I couldn’t make the gif any longer but the actual video is even funnier as he is quite hesitant to actually hold it and even asked if it was really dead (which we thought was yes), so the twitch really caught him off guard!

He's never going to trust you again... hahaha! Great memories being made right there :)

That’s a nice catch

There are no better times than those that we share our hobbies with the children, teach them many things and they like it. Whenever this happened to me, I was so happy!

Friend, how are you? good experience without a doubt although those fish were small I think they were about half the size of Jacob hahaha I see them something big

I also see that there was a lot of meat in them I like that food in the end nothing like eating fresh fish when they are taken from the sea and direct to the mouth

Hello my friend @ brian.rrr how are you? I love your fishing fridays I'm very glad that this time you could go fishing with Jacob

I hope the next time the fish are bigger, you imagine the face of Jacob when he sees a big fish makes me laugh when he takes it in his hands is that the fish are slippery and tremble a lot

Sure it was a good day that ended with a great dinner

It is a pity that you did not catch one as big as Jacob...

Very nice striped bass I can always see you find the best places to fish I just only wish I was there to catch them

a very enjoyable day. can get time fishing with Jacob.
what do you say about the fish you cook?

Thank you for sharing your fish report. Great way to spend time with your son fishing. And I like the ending when the fish is served for your meal.

B^^ HAPPY~ ... from SEOUL

Nice one @brian.rrr

I like Lee's Ferry in Colorado whenever I feel like fishing for naturally occurring rainbow trout. Sometimes, I see largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie and sunfish.

Wow

Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way.

Your little boy is enjoying the catching fish. He is very excited. Thanks KS for sharing.

Beautiful looking fish .

Wao very great experience for fishing, your is so brave, your child is so cute, your child looks so beautiful while fishing, this is very big fish,Many benefits of fish in our health, and your looks so handsome,I love to eat fish,Thanks for sharing.

Looks like you had a good time. I've had those little nibblers eat my bait away. It's annoying. Just jump on the line so I at least get something! That's nice you were able to catch enough for dinner. It's smart to start early in the day, so if you end up striking out, you can swing by the store to pick something up. Otherwise, you could be in trouble.

Enjoy the meal man! I think this fish is called Wolfsbarsch in germany :) Looks great!
