My friend caught this Taape (Blueline Snapper) today. The Taape is not native to Hawaii, and was first introduced to Hawaii in 1955 and over the next six years, 3,200 individuals were released. The State Department of Land and Natural Resources introduced the Taape to create a new food fish due to declining stocks of the native species. The problem was that the local people did not like to eat the Taape and regarded it as a pest. Local fishermen blame the Taape for eating the juveniles of the local species. This, however, has not been proven in scientific studies. The Taape gets a bad wrap as since it is a Snapper it is quite tasty. The only problem is the fish has a lot of bones thus making it difficult to eat the smaller ones.
