I have a simple yet deadly pattern that I like to tie onto a jig to catch trout. Fly fisherman uses this pattern all the time, but since I don't fly fish, I wanted to take their effective patterns and put it in a form of a jig.
I like to go light but enough weight to get the lure to the bottom and have the lure drift with the current. I cast up stream and reel in slack but keeping the lure at the lower half of the water column. Deadly and effective!
