500 lb Goliath...Literally

in fishing •  7 years ago  (edited)

This my friend Bobby K with his 500 lb Goliath Grouper.

Once over harvested through the 1980s, at least throughout SW Florida, they became a protected species. In fact, it's illegal to just have one on the boat. They used to waste massive beasts simply for some cheek filet. I have caught a handful of these monster fish and it's backbreaking every time. They inhale your bait or catch (if they are around they are worse than sharks) and just pull themselves into their hole! This is where the battle of will begins. In my prime, this beast wants to pull you in. You are belted in. The rod has to be embedded in your gut so the belt is a must! Lift up and reel down. Repeat this for agonizing minutes as your arms, legs and back become jelly, and you feel like you are loosing functionality in your hands and forearms burn. Then you see the 150 -350 lb average Goliath lying beside your boat....and say let's fish for something smaller! Honestly, if I was Bobby I would've been nervous about the Hammerhead Sharks that love to eat Goliaths
