Fishing off Dog Island Reef with @kcotton

My buddy @kcotton and his family just recently purchased a beach house about an hour south of where we live. He gets down there almost every weekend, but I have yet to make it down there. That was until yesterday.

We made plans to go fishing off Dog Island Reef at about 4pm on Saturday afternoon. I was pre-occupied all Saturday morning but was able to make the trip down to St. Teresa at around 2:30pm.

You all know how fair my complexion is so I can well equipped with my big hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

The drive took a little over an hour as I got stopped at seemingly every stop light. Once I pulled up to the neighborhood, I was amazed at how many houses were back there. There were easily 75 houses/duplex in this community.

The boat was already in the water so all we had to do was walk out to the boat and get going. But before we headed out to the reef, we caught some baitfish. After two or three throws of the cast net from @kcotton we had enough baitfish to last us the majority of the day.

Once we got in the boat, I dried off, applied some sunscreen and we were off.

Dog Island Reef is only a couple miles offshore so it did not take too long to get out to our eventual spot. We got our fishing poles prepped and our lines wet.

The first cast I threw out I caught a Black Sea bass but it was too small to keep! The third cast I caught a pinfish, which we used to catch a bigger fish! Then for next few hours I didn’t hook up with another fish.

On the other hand, @kcotton and his sister would each catch a few fish. @kcottton would hook up with a few trout, two which were keepers. In the meantime, we had another pole that we only put baitfish on to try and catch a bigger fish. Over the course of the next hour and a half we hooked up with over ten sharks. Most of them were around 1-2 feet long, but one was easily four feet long.

We moved around to a couple different spots and continued catching sharks. At the second to last spot we fished I snagged two trout, one of which was long enough to keep!

At around 7:30 or so we headed in for the evening. Overall, it was a great day on the way and decently successful! 4 keeper trout!

I can’t wait to hit the water again soon!
