Fishing on the Great Lakes of North America

The Great Lakes of North America and southern Canada are not only tourist destinations, they’re a great place to go fishing. Fishing in these Great Lakes can yield catches of many different varieties of fish; Brown Trout, Coho and Steelhead are among the many species you can look forward to reeling in.

Each lake has its own “standard” species found in their waters. For instance the largest lake, Superior (aptly named) has its own mainstay of fish such as herring, rainbow smelt, yellow perch and whitefish, to name a few. Then there’s lake’s Erie and Michigan, which boast large numbers of salmon and walleye, and more yellow perch. In fact, yellow perch is the most common fish found in all of the Great Lakes.

If you’re up for a challenge, I suggest setting a drift on Lake Ontario, where you can catch American eel and bullheads. You may even snag a stray sunfish or small mouth bass. It’s being said that fishing on Lake Ontario is the “best it’s been in years”.

Not only can you fish the Great Lakes at your own leisure, they also have Tournaments you can join (for a small fee) and win great prizes, not to mention bragging rights for the one you caught that was “this big”.
