You took on a serious load, obviously, it's yet another lesson. Next time, if he calls you, say, "I'll go, but only if you agree to go at my pace. I don't want to be running after you again, putting excessive strain on my heart."

Biting off more than I could chew on a recent hike
i said something like that after we were done. I think I get too competitive against other people even when I know that they are in much better condition than I am. I've seen it go the other way as well when someone goes cycling with me and they are really struggling and I don't even feel like I am exercising. I think in these situations that you need to find someone else to hike, bike, or workout with.
