Struggling with the Ketogenic Diet? 3 mistakes to avoid

in fitness •  7 years ago

I figured I would give a few pointers for those looking to do the Ketogenic Diet. I am a Wellness Counselor, and about half my working day is helping out with the needs and pitfalls of someone trying to do the Ketogenic Diet.

  1. Not eating enough Fats - If you still have quite an appetite then you have not included enough fats in your diet. Make sure they are varied sources, such as Grass-fed Butter, Organic Cream, Avocados or avocado oil, nuts and seeds, Bacon, Coconut Cream, and others.
  2. Not eating enough Protein - in the long term, most do not eat enough protein as they have focused on fat loss for too long their protein needs. I have seen this time and time again, when one will lose weight seemingly miraculously for 3-4 months, and then they hit a plateua and start losing muscle at the same time.
  3. Not properly incorporating fasting to kick start Ketosis - Around "these parts" there are many who fast culturally for religious reasons which includes not eating breakfast or lunch, and then eating a huge dinner to make up for it. Sadly this is what people think of when I talk about fasting, but this just doesn't cut it. For my Clients to see best results I have them not eat any food for a full 24 hour day, so NO breakfast, lunch or dinner. Starting with one day fast many can accomplish this with just water, and maybe a pinch of salt in the water to prevent dehydration. I then have them work up to 2-3 day fast eventually with a little bone broth, or maybe just a couple hundred calories in a day of fat calories only.

If you are struggling to lose weight from the ketogenic diet, these might change your perspective just enough, that it could make a big difference in your results.

Any other pointers for those struggling to lose weight on this diet?

good stuff man, i myself have been eating/living keto for nearly 2 years now. I initially lost 87lbs changing to keto style.. fat was the hardest one for me to overcome... what i found was if i was EVER hungry i would keep a container of coconut oil next to my desk, i would just stick a spoon of it in my mouth and in most cases it would cure my hunger and over time i found the more often i would stride to eat more fats, my weight would drop faster and faster.. the 2nd main struggle for me was water... i didnt drink enough water, thanks for upvoting my post.
