What are the claims?

A quick google search shows that many sites such as this one claim that DHEA is able to reverse age-related changes in fat mass, decrease abdominal adipose tissue, improve insulin sensitivity. There are also claims of significant decreases in visceral and subcutaneous fat. All of this seems too good to be true, is DHEA the secret to reverse age-related weight gain? Looking at the actual scientific studies behind it tell a different study.

What does the research say about its effectiveness and safety?

A quick look at the scientific literature and studies on DHEA shows that these weight loss claims are actually false in humans. One study has shown that 100-mg daily for 4 weeks did not have an effect on body mass in young competitive athletes. [1] Two other studies done on older populations have showed similar results, one with males and one with post-menupausal females, neither of which have shown any benefits from DHEA supplementation on various measurements of body composition. [2] [3] Additionally, other claimed benefits such as increased sex hormones  have all been shown to be unreliable.

As for the safety of supplementing with DHEA, it has been inconclusive. But most studies agree that it doesn't have any significant long term effects on the body, as long as doses aren't too high. 

Who should utilize DHEA?

If someone is still looking to use this supplement even though its benefits are inconclusive and unreliable, it is recommended for persons over the age of 40.

What are the recommend dosages?

In those over 40 years of age, the recommended dosage seems to between 25-50mg daily, but prolonged use of 100mg has been shown to be safe. Timing has not been shown to have a difference on supplementation.

Side Effects and Toxicity

No adverse or toxic effects have been shown from long term use. There does seem to be rare cases of DHEA causing androgenic side effects in women with increased facial hair being even rarer. Some studies have shown increase acne from oral DHEA, but it does not happen in all subjects.
