Day 1 Introduction - The Keto Cut Series #1

in fitness •  7 years ago

Welcome to The Keto Cut - a series that will follow my daily routines as I cut for the summer on a ketogenic diet. These posts may not be for all of you as they are intensely focused on fitness and nutrition. Health is one of the most important parts of my life and I take it very seriously and I figured I would share my experiences and daily "logs" with all of you who may also be interested in this topic.

Definition of a Keto Diet:

A Ketogenic diet (Keto diet) refers to an extremely low-carb (carb = carbohydrate) diet. The number of carbs that one can eat on a ketogenic diet varies from person to person and can be dependent on activity levels and many other factors. I typically keep my carbs below 30g (g = grams) per day in order to stay in Ketosis.

Ketosis is a "starvation" state that your body enters when it is deprived of carbohydrates. While in Ketosis, your body will burn fat for fuel rather than carbs in a process referred to as ketogenesis. Ketogenesis is a process where your body converts the fatty acids from stored fat and dietary fat into ketones which are used as an energy source for your body.

Some people consider this diet to be "unsafe", not practical for the average person and a "fad". Research on the body and the effects of the ketogenic diet have found these statements to be false and have actually proven that a correct Ketogenic diet can actually lead to far superior results when compared to just about every other "diet program" out there. I and many others look at Keto as a lifestyle rather than a diet.

Lifestyle is a much more fitting term as it purports that we should live a certain way rather than force some dreadful dieting program down our own throats.

The Greatest Piece of Advice for Anyone Following Keto:

I wanted to include this both as a reminder to myself and as a great tip for anyone else who decides to adopt a Keto program:

Focus on what you can eat, not on what you can't eat.

Honestly it sounds really simple, but I and many of my friends have fallen prey to a really constricting "voice" in our own heads when we've tried keto before - this "voice" in your head constantly questions why you're doing this and why you're giving up such an "amazing" thing - carbs. Carbs are everywhere in sight - cereal, toast, cake, strawberries - you name it and it probably has carbs in it.

I have to force myself to avoid thinking like that. I keep a list of foods that can be eaten on a ketogenic diet, rather than a list of foods that can't be eaten on a ketogenic diet. Both lists are very long, but it's a glass half full or a glass half empty type of situation. Focus on the positives - what you can eat, not on the negatives - what you can't eat.

Day 1

Day 1 Weigh-in: 198 lbs (note: I'm 6 feet tall and at approximately 24% body fat).

Workout Routine (leg day):

  • Barbell Back Squats
  • Squat Press
  • Leg Extensions
  • Lying Hamstring Curl
  • (Superset 1) Seated Calf Raises
  • (Superset 1) Standing Calf Raises

The first several days (3-7, depending on the person) are what's known as the "adaptation period." These days are going to be the hardest and the days where your body fights back the most. When you first remove all the carbs from your diet, you'll notice yourself feeling tired, hungry, irritable and many other things that culminate into what is often referred to as "keto flu." I'll keep my description of this to just what I've written so far, if you want to do more research on the adaptation period, just google: "Keto-adaptation".

Today was my first day without any carbs. The first day is usually not that hard because your body is still able to catabolize the glycogen stores in your body. It's when we get into the next couple of days where your body can feel extremely sluggish and weak. This is because the glycogen stores are slowly depleting and your body hasn't fully adapted to catabolizing fats for fuel.

In order to speed up this adaption period, I do intermittent fasting coupled with what is referred to as a "fat fast." My intermittent fasting routine is a simple 16-8 fast - I eat for an 8-hour window in the day and I fast for the other 16 hours (most of which are while I'm asleep).

The "fat fast" is where I eat 90% of my calories from fat, 10% from protein, and I keep my carbs as close to 0g as possible (note: I count my carbs as net carbs which means that I subtract the # of grams of fiber from the total carb count. This is because fiber cannot be broken down for energy by your body). This fat fast will last for about 3 days as my body adapts to ketosis and rids itself of glycogen stores.

Good luck with your diet. That takes a lot of discipline

Thanks @cookit! It can be tough at times, but you just gotta push past the carbs and focus on the positives!

That’s the best advice

Day 1 Weigh-in: 198 lbs (note: I'm 6 feet tall and at approximately 24% body fat).

Gosh are you a giant or something? You must be huge...lolzz

I find this post extremely educative as I got to learn a new concept today. Infact not just one but many new concepts.

Before now, I never knew what ketogenesis was. Infact never heard of it but I have a friend who actually practices this but she never gave it a name.

According to her, she stopped eating cabs and dis more of protein and other stuffs and the day she told me this, we argued about it as I couldn't see the sense in it. Why would anyone stop eating carbs in other not to get fat? Where is the connection? But with ketogenesis ,it now makes so much sense to me. Thanks man.

When you first remove all the carbs from your diet, you'll notice yourself feeling tired, hungry, irritable and many other things that culminate into what is often referred to as "keto flu

Youv only gone one day, how come you k ow so much about what's gonna happen in 3-7 days? Did you read it up from the internet? If yes then I would appreciate if you keep us updated on this so we know if we could match what you read on the internet with what's happening to you.

What is keto flu....is it an actual flu or just a name?

Haha @sistem! I'm definitely on the larger side of the spectrum, I've been lifting for almost 7 years now! I'm glad you learned some stuff! Ketogenic diets are really complex and there's a lot of science behind them! I find the results and implementations to be really fascinating!

I've actually been following this diet for the past 3 years. I only eat a Ketogenic diet for about 4-5 months per year and then for the rest of the months I eat "normal-ish". I've been through the keto adaptation process many times and it usually never lasts more than a few days for me and I've heard the same for other friends and family.

"keto flu" isn't a real illness, it's just a name that people have given to people when their adaptation isn't as smooth and they feel sick from being without carbs.

Sorry, when you say lifting you mean Weight lifting for 7 years now? If you've been weight lifting then what do you need the keto diet for? Weight lifting Burns fat naturally...

Would love a reply to this from you.

Yes I've been weight lifting for 7 years now. Strictly lifting weights may not directly lead to weight loss - the majority of weight loss happens from a change in diet. Just imagine someone who eats 10 cheeseburgers per day but then lifts weights for 1 hour a day as well. That person will obviously still gain weight even though they're lifting.

Thanks for the post! My wife and I started keto about a month and a half ago and we've lost a collective 10 pounds! She was a huge skeptic, but now she's all in.

I think something you should let people know is that the beginning is rough due to keto flu, but also sugar withdrawal. When we began, we didn't realize how impatient and irritated we were with each other until we stopped and questioned why.

Those two points were really rough on us, but now that we're over the sugar addiction and know how to prevent keto flu, we feel so much more amazing than we ever have before.

Keep fighting the good fight and share the keto knowledge!

Thanks for reading @straightupeats! That's phenomenal! Great work, keep it up! I've found that it's a similar case with most people - skeptical at first because it goes against nearly everything we're taught by the big box food companies and even our doctors, but once the diet gets rolling and you're in ketosis, you feel amazing and your mentality towards carbs completely shifts!

Keto flu is a great topic and really important - I'll make sure to talk about it in tonight's post, thanks for that idea!

Will do, you keep on fighting and sharing as well, my friend!

This is a very new style of post for me, I haven't really shared the fitness side of my life before so please let me know if you have any questions about this post and if you have any suggestions for future "Keto Cut" posts!

You could put the amount of weight and reps you do so you could have a log of your progress.

I've also tried to do ketogenic diet, but it's not really for me, my body gets big very easily but it also shreds very easily, doing IF, HIIT and walking in the morning on an empty stomach after taking a double dose of coffee and l-carnitine make my fat loss even faster. Ofc at the end of the day what matters is calories in calories out, good luck with your progress!

That's a great idea @teutonium, I'll add the weights and reps in on the future posts, thanks for the suggestion!

Ahh yes, I know a lot of people who are like that - easy to bulk and easy to cut. I wish I had the same good fortune! Exactly calories in calories out is one of the major components of weight loss. How do you feel about the l-carnitine? I've heard of it but haven't tried it before.

All supplements do is a 5-10% difference at best, if you want that extra hedge than you can take it, it's a moderate fat burner, what ppl don't know is that l-carnitine actually has another better side effect that is not fat burning, l-carnitine increases the amount of androgen receptors in your body and increases your free testosterone, thus making you lose weighter even faster and retain more muscle during a cut, i normally take it during a cut, i try to go the pre workout route without any sugar, it has everything that you need and even more.
After your cut remember to do something called reverse dieting , it's MUST not even kidding for your future fitness, i tried it last time i cutted and was able to raise my metabolism from 2000calories to 3200 calories without gaining fat

Keto is where it's at - I'm down 25 pounds and have never felt better. Best of luck! Upvoted and followed - can't wait to here about your progress.

Hey @emwalker! I agree Keto is my favorite way of eating. It's a tradeoff to not be able to eat a lot of binge-worthy foods like pasta and bread, but the benefits far outweigh those. I always feel really energetic while managing to lose weight really fast! What do you usually keep your carbs at, if you don't mind my asking?

My opinion is a person can eat whatever he wants...(But in moderation)And of course do not forget about sports!Morning and evening jogging will benefit!;)Good post @khaleelkazi !

I like this style of post.

People often refer to this low carb approach as the Atkins diet...a trade name of course and you have the proper name.

I look forward to hearing the specifics of your diet? Is a diet high in animal protein toxic to the body at all? Any tips for a vegan version of this diet?

Here is a famous study about protein that changed my approach. I have used your method to cut for a long long time. I like using the Vega style of protein supplement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_China_Study

Time to get ripped for the summer! You motivated me.

Thanks @sequentialvibe! I think I will add a section to each of these posts dedicated to specifically what I eat in a day, thanks for that suggestion. Animal protein is actually not toxic to our bodies (depending on where you source the meat) and there are a lot of benefits of eating it such as increased collagen, essential amino acids, etc. Unfortunately there are some downsides to animal protein - environmental and others - I'm confident that with the exponentially advancing technology that is coming to the world of biology, we'll be able to find an alternative way to "grow" large quantities of animal protein without actually raising livestock while still keeping all the benefits in place.

I have heard of The China Study, it's been a while since I've read about it so I'll definitely have to read up again on it! I do remember that there is a large amount of controversy surrounding it.

I've been on a keto diet for the past two months and couldn't be happier! So glad to see that you'll be doing the same. There are a lot of benefits that come with it, looking forward to seeing your progress my friend.

Hey @koldy! That's awesome, have you made some great progress on your program? How many times per week do you lift, if you don't mind my asking? The benefits are amazing - I always have a lot of energy, my skin improves and I'm just generally in a better mood when on the diet.

I would like to say I've made good progress, cut 10 pounds overall. I try and workout five or six times a week depending on my schedule. I've really enjoyed the diet so far and would recommend it to anyone that would be willing to try it. I have to say I've taken a couple of cheat days here and there. I'm focusing on bulking now though which should be interesting. Do you have a specific goal in mind for your diet?

I remember doing a low carb diet. It's brutal lol especially since I have a taste for rice and bread. It's a crazy fast way to loose weight though! I think you will lose water weight first if I remember correctly. But good luck on this journey !

haha yeah it can definitely be tough at times - I'm a HUGE rice and pasta guy myself! Yeah the weight loss should be really quick in the beginning as I drop water weight, the goal (which I will include in the next post) is to lose ~30lbs!

I'm sure you know this already, but don't drink your carbs! That also will help a lot only water will be horrible the firs few days but that's what I'm doing now, not a huge difference but over time it will pay out

I would like to read about Keto.. Im interest in about all what is related with healthy lifestyle ´cuase how you said "health is one of the most important parts of life" :)

Thanks for your input @liltammy! I'll definitely keep these posts coming along then! Keto is a passion topic of mine!

Am very sure you would have made a very good biology teacher with all the keto-genesis of a thing. Well, am glad to see that you have started and will look forward to see as you progress. Keep up and keep fit.

haha I'm not sure that I would have as I got horrible science grades in high school - actually I got horrible grades in every class! I do love Keto though and I'm obsessed with the science of it all. Thanks for your support @lordjames!

@khaleelkazi this is great stuff I agree with @teutonium can you provide the weights to see progressions and naybe what you are eating that day even if it is just in bullet points?

Thanks @geniuscrypto, I appreciate your suggestions! I will definitely add both the weights, sets, reps and food each day! Thanks for the ideas!

No problem at all bud keep up the good work, you cpupd land up inspiring a lot of people with this...

I dont know what is Keto until I finally met my colleagues who are into Keto... They eat a lot but no rice at all.. Everytime we go out for a lunch.. They never eat rice.. It works coz he was down by 20lbs in a month of doing this.. And take note they eat a lot of fatty foods.. Its just amazing...

I used to be extremely sceptical of this diet however have met plenty of people who have had excellent results following it. My only concern is that there are also a lot of people who follow the diet poorly and put their health at risk as a result. I’ve seen a few examples of this happening as well.

@khaleelkazi. This was a lot more interesting then I imagined. I took classes in health science and nutrition at Benedictine but this "Keto Cut" is a first. Do you get energy from proteins? I think you can do this as you are a relatively big guy and you may be able to reverse ketogenesis and turn keytones to energy. Is that what you are trying to do?

Very cool post. thank you sir.

Thank you! What was your favorite part of the post?
