Want great abs?

I think the answer to that question is . . . YES! There's not a single person on the planet who doesn't want celebrity quality abs. Having a true six pack is a great accomplishment and a huge confidence booster. How would you like to be at the beach knowing you're sporting some rock hard abs?

But despite our best wishes, a six pack doesn't just appear overnight, nor without dedication and effort.

That said, getting in shape and achieving that six pack you've always dreamed about is easier than it's ever been. In this technological age, the internet is a great source of information of all kinds, including fitness. And you don't need a gym membership to achieve this either - most abs workouts can be completed right in your very home with no workout equipment required.

Step 1: Put the Doritos down

There's a saying, "Great abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym," and although I can't entirely agree with this, there's still a lot of truth to it. No matter how hard you work your muscles, if you aren't feeding them with the energy and nutrition they deserve, they're not going to be able to grow, and you'll end up looking like a raisin by age 40.

Step 2: Get motivated. Stay motivated.

Gym buddy. Remember when those where popular back in the 90s? You never went to the gym solo, always with your gym buddy. And if he couldn't make it, you didn't either. I know some people feel having a partner motivates them to try harder, but more often than not, your gym buddy will let you down. His first excuse will be, "Got held up at work. Maybe tomorrow?". Next excuse, "I'm not feeling well today. How 'bout tomorrow?". And eventually, "I kind of like being fat. Maybe I'll get in shape tomorrow?"

Truth is, if the thought of walking past a mirror and seeing a six pack in your reflection isn't enough to keep you motivated, then a fitness partner won't either; they'll ultimately give up. But just because they do, doesn't mean you should, too.

Step 3: Staying active = staying fit

It's difficult to stay active when you're jammed in a cubicle work space from 9 to 5, but there are a few simply ways to get more active while on the job.

  1. Take the stairs in stead of the elevator. As often as this rule is recited, it's a great way to improve cardio and tone the muscles in your lower ligaments.

  2. Instead of finding a dark corner and playing Angry Birds during your break, go for a short walk instead. You'll be amazed at how refreshed and alert you are when you return to work - more blood flow and more oxygen in the brain results in greater focus.

  3. Stand up from your desk at least once an hour. Most employers will allow you a water break every so often, use that opportunity to walk around and get some exercise.
