Five Nuggets from Uncle Faust (Episode 4)

Five nuggets is a series inspired by an accidental collision with a similar project by Tim Ferris, author of The 4 Hour Work Week and Tools for Titans. In this weekly series, I share five things which caught my interest this week through my wanderings, web surfing, researching and time spent on Steemit.

Without further ado, five nuggets which caught my attention this week:

The Machine – Bert Kreischer on Robbing a Train with the Russian Mafia (Comedy)

This has to be one of the absolute best gems of comedy I’ve stumbled across in a while. I first learned about Bert Kreischer on Joe Rogan’s podcast. In this episode of his stand-up comedy, he talks about his summer spent as a foreign exchange student in Russia, how he earned his nickname, “The Machine,” and wound up robbing an entire train with the Russian mafia.

By far one of the best finds this week.

Steemit Featured Post: POCKET Genesis Post

Pocket Token Logo.png

In the event you have not heard already, STEEM now has its own derivative token POCKET (courtesy of @biophil). In some ways, POCKET can be equated to ERC20 tokens on Ethereum. In my opinion, this is nothing short of groundbreaking for STEEM.

The POCKET protocol will be generating tokens over a 14 day period commencing from the post date of the POCKET Genesis post (linked above). After that 14 day period has passed, no further POCKET tokens will be generated and the supply is locked. Any Steemit account holder can claim their free 1,000,000 POCKET tokens by following the directions from the POCKET Genesis post.

Thanks to @biophil for pioneering this initiative.

The Great Wave: Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of History (Book)

The Great Wave_Book Cover.jpg

After visiting the American Numismatic Association (Money Museum) one had to know posts about money would soon make their way to my blog. Years back when I lived in Manhattan, one snowy day I spent the day in the café reading this book cover to cover. It had such a profound impact on me and became one of the major influences which made me consider my first purchase of Bitcoin in 2013.

In this book, David Hackett Fisher provides some spectacular historical insight into the three great inflationary waves starting from the Middle Ages until the modern era. Were I to be asked for a single book recommendation, this is absolutely always the first which comes to mind.

Ascent of Money (6 Part Video Series)

On that same snowy day, I discovered the book The Great Wave linked above, I discovered another absolute gem of a book by Niall Ferguson, The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World. It was breathtaking in its scope and impacted me just as deeply as The Great Wave.

About five years after I read the book, I came across this six part series on YouTube developed my Ferguson. He traces the history of money from the very first clay tablet bearer bonds in ancient Egypt, into the rise of banking and through the modern financial crisis of 2008. It’s absolutely amazing.

Across the USA by Train for Just $213

http://dereklow.co/across-the-usa-by-train-for-just-213/

There is something beautifully nostalgic and romantic about rail travel in the age of airlines. Before I started to write on a consistent basis, my wife was busy establishing her career as a writer. While deep in the throes of writing her book, she stumbled across a promotion by Amtrack offering a limited number of free, cross-country rail tickets to authors writing a book. Unfortunately, it's something she missed out on, but it's been a bucket list item ever since for both of us.

In this blog post, Derek Low writes in depth about his cross country rail trip through the United States (3,397 miles, through 11 states and across 4 time zones in four days). He then summarizes how it’s possible for someone to do the same trip for much less than he did, and explains how to do it. It seems I may be scratching an item off my bucket list in the near future.

That concludes my #fivenuggets for this week’s episode. Take care my Steemitland friends and until next time…

this week post on fivenuggets was very impressive one great choice

Useful information about Pocket tokens and other nuggets are interesting. Thank you @lpfaust

@sharish5 thanks for stopping by to check out this week's nuggets. I appreciate the continued support.

Love the train journey link @lpfaust

@getonthetrain been a while since I've seen you. How are things?

I have to admit, of all the nuggets this week, that post about the cross country train trip was bay far one of my personal favorites. It's something on the bucket list calling to get crossed off.

I'm doing well. Yourself?

I actually checked out the Amtrak 15 day, 8 leg pass. Its only about $436 or so. Enough to go there and back, stopping at different cities. Very tempting!

@getonthetrain I'm doing well myself, just lots of life changes going on at the moment. I thought free time was a precious commodity when I had one child. Now with a second, I'm curious where it all ran off to.

$436 is a steal to go coast to coast on Amtrack. I need to let the kids get a bit older before I do that with my wife. We were thinking of grabbing a sleeper car. I read a blog post a few months back from a guy who grabbed a sleeper car with his girlfriend and ran up the East Coast of the US. It was amazing to discover how much luxury still exists with modern train travel in the age of mass air travel.

I really need to scratch this off my bucket list before hyperloops come into play.

My second child is just 5 months, so I know all about not having time.

I think you have plenty of time before hyperloops take over. You ever read my old article about the precursor to Musk's hyperloop - built in 1870?

https://steemit.com/technology/@getonthetrain/elon-musks-hyperloop-one-its-forgotten-nyc-precursor-from-1870

@getonthetrain I missed that post of yours, and I'm not sure how that happened. Nevertheless, I have given it a belated upvote through this comment. Probably better now because I have a ton more SP than I did back then and STEEM is worth a bit more.

Train rides seem to have a serious luxury component to them in the modern world where time is managed to the minute. I'd love to see the world step back from this insane obsession with hyper-productivity and instant gratification.

Nevertheless, plan to scratch this item off my bucket list in the near future.

Ha, thanks! It is actually my third highest rewarded post ever, was first for a long time.

I don't think the world will step back, but you can and find like-minded people. There are still many places in the world where life goes on at a slow pace. My type of places too.

@lpfaust,
"STEEM now has its own derivative token POCKET" seems interesting! A great post with very useful information! Thank you very much for sharing with us! Really appreciate your effort!

Cheers~

@theguruasia thanks for stopping in to sift through this week's nuggets. It's always good to see readers finding value in them.

In terms of POCKET, if you have not already claimed your 1,000,000 tokens, I would advise you do it soon. As I understand it, only 512 Steemit users have claimed these tokens, so they have the potential to become something lucrative.

Very Valuable Information and sttmit. grate post . 100% like and resteem.

@stmit thanks for stopping by to check out this week'd fivenuggets. I appreciate the upvote and resteem.

Great post and very interesting!. thanks your posting.

@goldcoin I'm glad you found some thing in this week's fivenuggets which resonated with you. I appreciate the upvote.

I've seen the Machine standup story. It was bueno :) I'd communicate in similar fashion if someone dropped me off in Russia tomorrow.

Already got my share of POCKET. Very exciting times!

New Post!

Solution to Steemit's Problems?

@oddnugget glad you stopped by to check out this week's selections. Always good to get some feedback.

When I came across that clip, I was drinking hot coffee and I was not prepared for how much his stuff was going to make me laugh. Makes me wish I'd done foreign exchange when I was younger and I was not drinking a hot liquid at that time.

Glad you picked up your POCKET tokens. When I was last reading through @biophil's blog, it turns out only like 512 Steemit accounts claimed the tokens. Could be lucrative. Interesting times indeed.

@lpfaust - This article carries very valuable information Sire. I am just amazed by the Train link that you indicate there. Across the USA by Train for Just $213? Wow that is cool. Therefore, I wish to ReSteem your post Sire.

@steemwija I'm glad you toook some time to check out this week's finds. Thanks for the upvote and the resteem.

I was just as surprised about the price of a cross country train trip. It was by far my most favorite nugget this week.

Very interesting video especially the Machine – Bert Kreischer I just enjoy that video and other nuggets are also amazing.....

@sanks7 thanks for checking out #fivenuggets this week. Glad you took some time to stop by.

I stumbled upon Bert Kreischer quite by accident this week and I have been hooked. The dude has a serious gift for comedy. If you have a chance, check out the longer comedy routine which that clip is taken from. It's about 1 hour long and you will absolutely pee yourself laughing. He is awesome.

Ya ofcourse I will definitely checkout

Oh, thanks, I'll try to figure out the free tokens.

@dlina-v-metrah I think it's worth doing for a couple of reasons.

First, it's the very first derivative token of STEEM and as the ecosystem grows (and community tokens are possibly created in the future) POCKET holds a first mover advantage in that ecosystem.

Second, when you consider it's a give away which requires no capital investment into a computer to mine, I think that's an absolute steal. It's truly a free token giveaway.

As of the last post from @biophil (which I read), I think only 512 Steemit accounts claimed their tokens by the midway point of the distribution. There is every likelihood less than 2,000 accounts could conceivable control the supply of tokens. As the platform grows, it's possible this could become something lucrative.

Thanks for sharing the next post on #fivenuggets this is getting better and better :D

@blazing thanks for stopping by to read through my #fivenuggets each week. I think of all the things I write about, this series is the one I enjoy the most. I find it enjoyable to share some of the hidden treasures I stumble across each week as life takes me on a great adventure.

I seriously need to do that coast to coast train ride...

It had such a profound impact on me and became one of the major influences which made me consider my first purchase of Bitcoin in 2013.
I got the main point on this posts by your own words. it clearly show how these nuggets will rise with the giant.

@futuresmart glad to see you stop by this week for this episode of #fivenuggets. Thanks for showing your support.

Both of those books (now a YouTube series in the case of The Ascent of Money) are nothing short of amazing. I'm a very strong advocate that everyone should read them.
