Task 1 | Flash Fiction

On the 7th of January, we had our first Creative Writing class and personally I did not know what to expect with this class. I thought that since the title had the word 'writing' on it so I had my expectation that we would be writing long essays everyday. Little did I know, it was more than that. We started our lesson with a brainstorming session where every student need to come to the front and write anything that they had in mind about Creative Writing. I was pretty much clueless about everything so I just wrote 'different genre' on the whiteboard. Next, we had a short discussion where we defined 'Creative Writing' using our own words. Again, I'm always clueless during the first day of class or maybe I was still in new year mood at that time (laughs). I listened to other students' definitions and they were using these bombastic, jaw-dropping and lofty words. When it was my turn to share my definition, I just said something like this.. "Creative Writing is a type of writing where writers have the freedom to be creative." I know. I know. I did not miss that look from my lecturer when she heard my definition.

After the short introduction of Creative Writing, we then proceeded to the next activity. My lecturer loves to surprise us, so she suddenly told us to write a story in just one sentence. Hmm, it sounded a bit impossible. But we tried our best to come up with a mind-blown story in just one single sentence. We were given 10 minutes to think about our story. Tick tock, tick tock. Time's up. I put my pen down and looked at my one sentence story. I was not satisfied with my sentence but I managed to come up with something like this:

I thought that it sounded quite good. It turned out that Flash Fiction was something like this "For sale: baby shoes, never worn by Ernest Hemingway." A pause. Then, I quickly closed my notebook.
