~ IS THE EARTH FLAT? ~
The curve of the Earth can be a proved thing. But can we prove that the Earth is a sphere floating in space apart from leaving it? . . . but that's another story hey!...
Before we get into the below experiment with a piece of string; a question: “Why does the sun shine under the clouds at sunrise when the sun is supposed to be going around and around 5000 miles up, and could not possibly shine under the clouds, could they?
The thing about the curve is that it is so subtle, and thus many say the earth if flat because we cant easily see the curve...
Below is a way to check with a piece of string and any flat body of water.
- WE NEED:
i) A view of a body of water to the horizon, which can be on the top of a cliff but do this on a clear day with the sun reflecting on the water for a very clear view of the border between the horizon and the sky...
ii) A piece of string 3 metres or so long (15 feet)... and a place to attach the string on both sides of the string parallel with the horizon...
iii) A minimum of two people for convenience of set-up and verifying the results... - THE METHOD:
Get a piece of string level with the sunrise/sunset over any body of water that is 20 to 50 miles visible. Tie the string line TIGHT SO THAT WE CAN SEE UNDER THE STRING (this is important) and then level each side of the string (however) with the horizon looking from the centre of the string (you will need 2 people and the eye shall be the same distance away from the string as the length of the string itself) ... Be patient here, as it can take awhile to get it level...
OK. . . are we level? Good... It needs to be level and the longer the string the easier it is to see the results... - FOR CONVENIENCE:
Let us DEFINE the centre of the string as POINT A on the horizon. In other words POINT A is the centre of the horizon in the centre of the string...
Lets make the end of the string on the left side; called the LEFT side. . .
Lets make the end of the string on the right side; called the RIGHT side. . . - TO OBSERVE:
We line up the LEFT side of the string with the centre (POINT A) of the sunrise/sunset at the horizon... (the position of our eye is at 90 degrees to the string and the string distance away from the LEFT side, so we are making an equalateral triangle between the string, the position of the eye, and the RIGHT side of the string line . . .).
i) With the horizon below the string line we observe POINT A is almost touching the string line (underneath the stringline)...
ii) From this LEFT side of the string line position, AND by moving ONLY our eye, we can run our eye view along the string without moving our head.
iii) We can observe most clearly that the RIGHT side of the horizon is most definitely below the string line, and a considerable distance from the string line. . .
iv) Check and double check this fact. Have many people do this, so we have no doubt that POINT A is right on the string line (on the LEFT) and the other end (RIGHT side) shows the horizon is a distance from the same string line...
v) We now do the same observation on the both sides of the string line...
vi) We then move our body so that the eye can look to the LEFT side of the string line (in the same triangular configuration) with the RIGHT side aligned with POINT A, on the horizon.
vii) We can clearly observe the LEFT side by moving ONLY our eye view along the string line, which shows that the LEFT side on the horizon is a distance from the same string line...
vii) The head does not move (at all) to do these observations... - CONCLUSIONS:
What we see is that with reference POINT A on the horizon being the common point in both observations:
We find that;
i) The horizon on both LEFT and RIGHT sides of the string line shows a drop of a considerable distance on each side of the string line relative to the common POINT A.
ii) When we place both observations together we can conclude that a curve happens in relation to the horizon and the string line.
iii) The Earth indeed appears to have a curve in it, and thus it is not flat, and equally the curve in the Earth is so subtle from 100 metres above sea level (where we initially did these observations looking into the Pacific Ocean sunrise 26th Feb 2016) that from simple observation we could not be sure that it is flat or with a curve without instruments that show the curve involved.

Hahaha. I watched a video about the facts that are impossible but true and part of it was how the Earth is flat. I forgot the link but a steemian shared it. Elevation of terrains from Marianas Trench to Everest could be calculated because everything else is flat. But the Earth's shape is oblate spheroid.
