TROPICAL STORM GORDON UPDATE
Good afternoon everyone. While NYC is enjoying a cloud-free, hot beach day as promised, things are going downhill rapidly in Florida as well as the forecast for the Gulf from Louisiana on east.
This morning, Tropical Storm Gordan formed as it was making its transit across the south Florida peninsula. Areas such as Key Largo, Miami, Ft Lauderdale, and West Palm are being pelted by heavy rain, gusty winds, and a few brief water spouts have been reported off of the beaches.
Early development of Gordon has posed some questions for the future. While many weather stations keep Gordon at Tropical Storm strength along the entire path, I feel that we may potentially have something a little stronger on our hands in the end. This is something I've discussed for the past couple of days, as well as my concern for rapid development once it enters the hot Gulf.
Again, time is on our side as Gordon is moving very quickly. It won't have the window to become something widespread and devastating. However, it could be just enough to create localized coastal problems when it makes it second landfall somewhere between New Orleans, LA and Mobile, AL. Then a wider range of issues in terms of flooding rains and tornadic activity.
For those living in south Florida, you're already in the thick of things and what you're seeing now is what you'll get. Be aware of flooding issues in poor drainage areas and do not attempt to drive through standing water. For those along the Gulf, stay tuned to the forecast and be guided by your local government and weather officials.
