Title: 'Dazzling Sunflowers.'

Sunflower Facts:

The radiant, ever popular, sunflower is the only flower with flower in its name?
They are the national flower of the Ukraine and are the state flower of Kansas.
Sunflower oil contains many minerals such as Calcium, Iron Vitamin A and D.
Over 2000 seeds can be found in one sunflower alone. The head of the sunflower is made up of 1000 to 2000 individual flowers which are joined at its base.
Sunflower seeds are either black or striped. Sunflower oil is produced from the black seeds and snacks are produced from the striped seeds.

Sunflower oil is used to soften leather, condition hair, is applied to wounds, used in cooking, as a medicine, animal feed and bio-diesel.
The scientific name for the Sunflower is “Helianthus” Helia means Sun and Anthus means Flower.
Sunflowers can reach heights of 8-12 feet within a six month period and are one of the fastest growing plants available.
A gentleman by the name of Melvin Hemker grew 837 flowers from a single plant in the year 2001.
A 2 inch sunflower was produced using the Bonsai technique. This is the shortest mature Sunflower on record.
The difference between cultivated sunflowers and wild ones is; cultivated ones have a single stem and a large seed head, whereas the wild ones are highly branched with small heads and seeds.
There are over 60 varieties of sunflowers available around the world in different shades. Some varieties feature striped petals.

Some Sunflowers have different colored petals, and there are a variety of different shades in the centers.
The large petals which are found around the edge are individual ray flowers, which do not develop into seeds.
The Guinness world record for the tallest sunflower is 25 feet 5 ½ inches This was grown by M. Heijims in Oirschot, Netherlands in1986.
The Sunflower with the largest head measured slightly more than 32 inches in diameter and was produced by Emily Martin in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada in 1983.

Sunflowers follow the movement of the sun across the sky from east to west, and this process is known as heliotropism.
The spiral formation of seeds in a sunflower almost always follows the Fibonacci sequence.

very beautiful sunflowers

Thank you for your comment @rekha007 glad you like them.

Gorgeous photos, Trudee! And great sunflower info, too. You are really making me miss flowers!

Thanks so much Melinda......hopefully by viewing flowers that are not in season where you are at the moment will fill the gap a little until you can enjoy the flowers in your garden again.

You are right! It certainly helps! It was very dreary here today, not quite as cold and it ended up raining most of the day. Bleak but better than snow!

Do you have central heating in your home Melinda?

Yes and I do not know anyone in Wisconsin who does not. Natural gas is widely available, although some rural residents must use propane. I am lucky to have natural gas, because heating with propane has gotten expensive. Forced air furnaces like mine, are the most common.

I imagine it would be very hard to survive the winters in areas with temps and snowfalls like yours without adequate heating Melinda. Although Brisbane can get very cold at times I didn't have any heating on at all last winter. It was very mild for me but I do know others in the same complex wouldn't agree with me. Our unit faces north east and we get a lot of sun which makes all the diference. I'd love to experience a white Christmas one day.

I think we would call your winter temps cool, not cold! Cold is when the moisture inside your nose freezes when you breathe! I do hope you get to come play in the snow sometime!

Haha.......I don't believe I've had the pleasure of icicles forming inside my nostils before Melinda. That would make an interesting macro shot wouldn't it? I'd LOVE to come and play in the snow one day.........so I will continue to steem on and hope the steem/steam doesn't melt the snow. (lol)

Very beautiful! 😍👍
