Stuff That Makes A Difference

There are two kinds of stuff:

1. Stuff that makes a difference
2. Stuff that doesn't make a difference

It wouldn't be any great surprise to suggest that we should be focusing on the first of these: the stuff that makes a difference. Those actions, tasks, relationships etc that move the needle. That have real impact. The 20% of the 80/20 rule - the vital few.

But the reality of life is that so much of it is made up of number two: stuff that doesn't make a difference. Stuff like "paper-shuffling", dealing with "red-tape", admin, mundane and repetitive tasks. This is the stuff that seemingly has little or no impact or direct bearing on yours or anyone else's success or happiness. It is the 80% of the 80/20 rule.

We are directed to focus on No.1 - the stuff that matters. The stuff that makes a difference at the exclusion, where possible, of No.2. But is this possible? Do we need the No.2 to give the No.1 meaning and context? To make the No.1 stuff important, do we need No.2 stuff? Is it the ying to the yang?

It is difficult to find anyone (successful or not) who does not get caught up in the weeds of No.2 stuff. Heck, there are now whole industries being built around repetitive and mundane tasks such as outsourcing to VA's and automation etc.

Are these new emerging industries because we have more No.2 stuff or are we less tolerant of what we have always had? A bit like the influx of storage warehouses for all the new "stuff" that people acquired and had to be housed in these specialist paid-for lock-ups?!!! That was down to heightened consumerism.

Are we seeing the same with tasks? Are we asking for more of it? Is this due to technology or has nothing changed.
