In mining rig design, a way of addressing the issue of space efficiency and scalability of dealing with heat ventilation is via what is known as the "closed case" mining rig design. This involves encasing the entire computer in a box usually with the smallest volume possible, and using high speed fans to facilitate concentrated air movement within the case. This allows for 200+ GPU's (Graphical Processing Units) to be crammed into the same amount of space as 50 GPU's in open frame rigs. The reason for this is the cross section per card perpendicular to the airflow of the ventilation of the data center room is being decreased substantially. The components of the computer like the motherboard and similar are placed inline with the graphics cards which immediately reduces the height of the rig by 200-300%. However the real compounding effect comes from the secondary space saving in the lateral direction. The biggest benefit of closed case design is the concentrated airflow, allowing for the graphics cards units to be place incredibly close together while still remaining cooler than open case rig with the cards 500% higher separating distances. The Foleum project has recognized this and have designed a well packaged rig build lineup to roll out in their new mining facility. Go to https://www.foleum.io to learn more about their project.
