Pope Lick Monster: North American Folklore

An area outside Louisville, Kentucky is said to be home to a nefarious humanoid creature, who is interested in luring people to their deaths. The area haunted by this creature is the trestle bridge above Pope Lick Creek, the creature is the Pope Lick Monster, a part-man, part-goat monster.

Not only does this monster have many goat features, such as strong goat's legs and rams horns, he is also said to be somewhat deformed, with greasy black hair and is much larger than a normal man. His skin is said to be extremely pale, contrasting with the black fur on his goat hooved legs.

There are many conflicting accounts about both his origin and his method of murder. Some say the Pope Lick Monster kills his victims with an axe, others are sure the monster lures victims to the trestle right before a train comes. As for his origins, there are at least two popular accounts. One being that he was an unwilling circus attraction, abused by the ring master. When his train derailed at the trestle, killing the rest of his party, he used his freedom to take out his anger of his imprisonment in the circus upon unsuspecting people who crossed his path. The other origin story says that he was the product of a disgusting love affair between a local farmer and his goat.

Unlike many mythological creatures from urban legends, the Pope Lick Monster has an actual body count. While there have not been any confirmed sightings of the monster, many have fallen to their deaths or been struck by a train, seeking a glimpse of the legendary goat-man.
