There is no evidence that certain diets are effective in treating autism, now known as autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex brain disorder that has no known cure. For this reason, many frustrated parents resort to unconventional alternative therapies, such as restrictive diets that are free of gluten and caffeine, in an attempt to help their children.

Gluten is a protein found in many grains, while casein is a protein found in dairy products. However, there is little evidence that the diet stimulates the emergence of autism spectrum disorder or that restricting the intake of gluten and caffeine improves symptoms. For children who are growing, restrictive diets may lead to undernourishment.

If you are considering an alternative treatment for autism spectrum disorder, consult your child's pediatrician, who may help you understand the potential benefits and risks, and identify any local sources that may provide additional support. If you decide to have a restricted diet, work with an approved dietitian to develop a nutritional plan for your child.
