The Gin Files – Gin (Mother’s Ruin) A short Introduction

Sweet, savoury, London Dry, with tonic, neat, in cocktails, gin liqueur, room fragrances & candles, gin flavoured chocolate, made from sweet potato, sloe gin, distilled, double distilled – the list of possibilities seems endless.IMG_20180530_192448.jpg

What’s my interest other than liking the taste? I work in a gin shop for a couple of days per week and it’s truly fascinating. And what is really interesting is that people, especially women between 30 and 50 are coming in to the shop and telling me that they have just discovered gin, with the fruity flavours such as pink grapefruit and rhubarb being the most popular. However for it to be legally known as gin the taste of juniper must be prevalent.

It was first developed in the Middle Ages and originated from a herbal medicine. It became popular in London, particularly when William of Orange became King William III. He brought the original “Jenever” with him from Holland and the rest, as they say, is history.IMG_20180530_194821.jpg
