Hi Everyone,
Today we are going to try something new and discuss cooking. Everyone should at some point in their life learn to cook, even if it's just heating something up in the microwave-because we all need to eat. The cat doesn't help much with the cooking but she does like to eat some of the spoils. We aren't going to get into too many details with the recipe since I usually wing it and eyeball things, so instead let's discuss the methods and habits of a self-proclaimed chef.
Cooking requires quality ingredients, experience, and feel; you have to love good food if you wish to be a chef. The more diversity and freshness in the kitchen, the better-but often time and habits limit this, so we make the best with what we've got. I don't like to prepare meals that take over an hour since coming home after work, cooking a big meal and leaving room for Steemit is impractical. I also don't want to run around to every corner of the grocery store to grab ingredients that really don't make much of a difference and just add to the cost. Cooking with what you've got is ideal. There are dozens of spices, measuring cups, a scale, utensils, pots etc. at home and many grocery stores within walking distance, but let's keep it simple.
Today I'm going to discuss a very easy and customizable meal, good for anyone who doesn't mind chopping things up- Fish Tacos.
This looks more complicated than it actually is, it is a great meal to make because people in the house can help you and leftovers are practical. I happened to come across some fish in the freezer that was caught in the fall, using fish in tacos is the best way to mask that old fishy smell. You don't need to make tacos with fish, almost any meat works but don't waste good meat with tacos there are better things to do with it.
The easiest and probably the cheapest way to make tacos is just to buy the kit. A kit has tortillas(tacos), salsa, and the seasoning. You can make everything on your own or buy it separately but this adds time and money. I buy the kits about 50% of the time and don't necessarily recommend this popular brand but have used it before with great success.

To save us all some time, the directions are on the box. By no means do you have to use ground beef, I usually use fish or chicken. Fry it up, add some onion then the seasoning and you're good to go. To lower the salt, use more meat and onions or less seasoning (chili powder), you can add a little water when it's almost ready so the mix isn't too dry. Make sure to heat the tacos (soft or hard) up in the oven and doctor up the salsa with some hot sauce and spices because the store packets are rather bland.
Chopping up whatever else you want to put in your tacos is self-explanatory, it's all up to your preference. You don't need separate bowls for everything as it is all going into the taco anyways. When making tacos, I just use whatever is around the house, missing a few ingredients is fine. Cheese is the only must have, I used feta cheese which partners well with fish. You may also have noticed the fish wasn't battered, not that I'm against it, it's just time-consuming and adds calories. There was homemade guacamole there too, it's also unnecessary and costs extra 😸
So there you have it, Cooking with Crypticat. I'll write about some other things which are simple to cook but taste delicious and will try to take more pictures next time (but am usually too busy prepping). I feel sorry for people who can't cook, it isn't difficult and doesn't take very long. Take-out food is terrible for the environment, it's often unhealthy and is never less expensive for what you get. By the time that food arrives at your house, you could have made (or opened) something great. You'll probably extend your life eating healthier by preparing food yourself and save time at the gym!
Let me know what you think and your opinion on cooking. Do share some recipes as I am always looking for something new to try. Please feel free to comment, I generally follow back and upvote quality comments.
Bye for Meow 😸 mRrrrrrr....
I like to replace lettuce with cilantro when making a taco. Maybe i will make a taco this weekend. I want to use duck meat.

Never tried duck before. Use your own seasoning as the taco mix could overwhelm the rich flavour of duck.

Fish tacos are awesome! Well... at least the fishy bits are awesome, and my Humans seem to love the rest of it.
This household is all about good food! There's a lot of cooking here, simply because we love food — and what we can make at home (even if it's a little extra effort) tends to be better than "eat out" food, in most cases. At least when you're on a budget!
