Food effect on acid-base balance

It started to observe for the first time in 1912. and first human related researches came from 1960. Food intake mainly affects on urine pH level, but also it influence on blood pH level  while higher pH value is more desirable in both cases. Blood pH value is under homeostatic control so it is not possible to reach serious disbalance with only food consumption.

Acidosis and acidemy

Acidosis is impulsive fall of blood pH level around 7,35 and acidemy is patological condition where that value goes even lower and it can result with death. As I said that blood pH is generally under homestatic control, food intake also has its impact and it can result with slightly stage of chronic acidosis. That fact is really important because even slightly state of chronic acidosis has negative influence on whole system in our body. It increases risk for kidney stone diesase, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and insuline insensibility. Therefore acidosis caused with long term food consumption has concrete negative health impacts.

Which food is good for prevention of acidosis and acidemia?

Modern western diet (when I say diet I mean food intake ,not any food related restriction) makes bigger amount of acid than Paleolithic diet. Vegeterian diet also has positive impacts on acid-base balance because it causes growth of pH value moving it to higher alkaline level (what prevents any signs of acidosis or acidemia). Therefore diet highly based on food of animal origin and grains with high natrium intake contributes to acidosis while fruits, vegetables and water rich with minerals have reverse and positive effect for acid-base balance.

Which food has good effects on urine pH level?

Food effect on urine pH is specific because it is almost impossible to anticipate because of metabolic reactions for example lemon that is itself acid results with higher alkaline level. Besides lemon, almonds, coffee, cabbage, spinach and beet contribute to higher pH and meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, corn, full grain bread, walnuts and all fruits besides cranberries and plums results with lower pH i.e. higher acid level. High protein intake, especially proteins that consist of amino acids that are rich with sulfur contributes to acidosis. Milk, tea, honey and sugar have neutral influence on urine pH level.
