These tips work regardless of whether you are using a DSLR camera or your smartphone.

Steemit will be much more valuable if we produce quality content. The better the content, the better the rewards we all share!

Here are 3 tips that you can use to instantly take your food photography to the next level:

1. Use natural lighting ๐ŸŒ…

For naturally beautiful photos that are perfectly lit, you can't go wrong with taking your food pictures near a large window flooded with sunlight. But make sure your subject isn't placed in direct sunlight as this will not give you great results, rather place your subject near the window out of direct sunlight but covered in diffused light.

2. Use a Tripod

A tripod was something that instantly gave my photography an upgrade. It gives you the ability to choose from where the viewer's eye will be looking at the photo so you can easily craft the image exactly how you want to.

Using a tripod allows you to style to the camera. When you don't use a tripod the image constantly changes as you move the camera with your hands, this means you never get a consistent image and therefore it is much more difficult to get the "perfect' shot.

As a result of using a tripod, your composition skills will improve significantly!

Using a tripod will also reduce motion blur, giving you a sharper overall image.

3. Choose the Right Angle ๐Ÿ“

A pizza and a burger need to be shot from completely different angles. The burger needs to be shot at a 0 or 45 degree (side) angle as most of the burger's detail is on the side. On the other hand, pizza has all of its detail on the top and therefore a 90 degree (top) angle works better here.

This pizza was shot at a 90 degree angle:

These fruit cups were shot at a 0 degree angle to capture all of the detail of the fruit layers:

BONUS TIP: Edit Your Photos

Editing your photos makes a big difference. I use Lightroom, there is a desktop and free mobile app that makes editing your photos quick and easy.

Hereโ€™s a photo of my chickpea tuna sandwiches before editing:

And after editing with Lightroom:

Massive difference right?

Thanks for the tips. Makes me realize I need to put more thought into this process.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

I find that the more you prepare and plan your shots the better results you get.

If I donโ€™t plan exactly how I want the pictures to look I waste so much time trying to get it perfect while shooting ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Thanks for the tips... I will be using my tripod more when it's dark and I have to stay indoors for my pics. I love to get pics with nature as my props.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Using a tripod when the light is low is key to getting better photos! Thanks for reminding me I should have included that in this post ๐Ÿ˜†

I always try and get some green or something from nature into my pictures - it instantly makes it more appealing ๐ŸŒฑ thanks for reading Amy!

Great tips! I keep working to try to get better at this. Even if your recipes taste delicious, no one will want to make them if they don't look good!

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Thatโ€™s what I found in the beginning too - my food and recipes were godsmackingly delicious but the pictures were subpar so no one tried them! ๐Ÿ˜‚

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Loved this information. Thanks for the tips. Also going to have to check out the vegan pizza!

Good job! Thanks to @deliciousplants you have planted 1.78 tree to save Abongphen Highland Forest in Cameroon. Help me to plant 1,000,000 trees and share my Steem Power to the others. Selfvoting is prohibited, but that should be the reason to spread the world to protect our precious environment. Check out profile of our conservation association @kedjom-keku and the founder/coordinator @martin.mikes to get more information about our conservation program. My current SP is 18374.85. Help me to plant more trees with your delegated SP.

Thanks a lot,

Great tips here, My photo skills ned a serious upgrade LOL. Thanks for the post guys, keep it up. Also lightroom, will have to check that out too. Is there a free windows version or just mobile?

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

There is a windows version, but there is a $10 monthly subscription fee. The free mobile app is just as good, unless you want to do some hardcore editing.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Cool, nice one. I have the android version downloaded. I'll skip the subscription service. Cheers

Hi, @deliciousplant! As a new steemian I like to improve my posts on the platform. For this I need to share very good quality photography. I possess a smart phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ Samsung S 6, so far. The problem is I donโ€™t know much about how to make good quality photos. So, thanks ๐Ÿ™ a lot for your tips. I really appreciate it.

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

The Galaxy S6 has a great camera and you can get great shots with it! โญ๏ธ

You can get the same blurred background effect I have on my photos by using the selective focus setting on your camera app. It makes a similar effect to an expensive DSLR lens. It makes the photos look very professional.

I suggest you try it out! Just click on "mode" in your camera app and then on "selective focus". ๐Ÿ“ธ

I am going to be posting more tips on my profile soon to make your photos even better!

I loved your tips! Theyโ€™re very helpful and I think Iโ€™m gonna try them out with my next meal tomorrow โ˜บ๏ธ

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Awesome I would love to see how they come out! ๐Ÿ’š

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

Upvoted/followed/resteemed!

This was not only informative but gave us incentive to continue, so you donโ€™t need to be professional to post great photos. Thank you so much ๐Ÿ˜Š @deliciousplants !

ย  ยท ย 7 years agoย

What an awesome comment, thank you @roger-that! โญ๏ธ We are by no means professionals so all the knowledge we have will be shared here on Steemit to help everyone else, thatโ€™s the beauty of this platform ๐Ÿ’š

This is awesome information! Thank you for all the tips! I am excited to start following you because I am a vegetarian trying to go vegan. Iโ€™m making a recipe collection of delicious sounding vegan recipes so I am prepared.
