Grab Bag of Apples Reveals a Gem

GrabBag.jpg
Note: The remainder of the novel will return soon to my blog. This post about apples is time-sensitive, so consider it an intermission until the next segment of bad fiction arrives shortly.

It’s that time of year on the west coast of the U.S. Good apples start coming in. With apologies to summer apples, the first great apples of our season are Gravensteins, which I wrote about last year. Gravs are probably my favorite apples, but they are finished very quickly and do not keep well. You need to know when they are being harvested and strike quickly or you’ll miss them. I either make a trip to apple country or find a store that brings some to market while they still have some green behind those red stripes. Once they get mushy and yellow, I’ve lost interest.

Following close on their heels this year were the Honeycrisps. People in some northern climates know Honeycrisp apples well. When ripe, this is a terrific apple with a deep flavor that seems to develop best in cold weather, but most Honeycrisps in the west are lacking that extra dimension (either due to the weather being too warm or the growers picking them too early). As a result, most Washington and California-grown Honeycrisps are fairly lackluster, aside from their snappy texture. But this year was better: finally, we saw some smaller Honeycrisps in the stores (I am assuming from semi-dwarf trees that were planted relatively recently and have started to produce). These are very good, a pleasant surprise.

Don’t tell me about Fujis or Granny Smiths or even Golden Delicious apples yet. It’s too early. Anyone picking those apples on the West Coast before October should be sentenced to eat their own sour apples. Leave those things on the tree so they can develop some flavor and the Fujis can sweeten up.

The store near me was selling grab bags of heirloom apples from a local farm. I love a good mystery! And I love my apples. So I bought one and attacked it. Nice to see some ugly apples; often those are the best tasting ones.

Group.jpg

Let’s see what they gave us. Here is a group photo though my kids may have eaten one or two of these before I catalogued each of them.

Russet

Scratchy.jpg
GoldenRussetSpecialty.png
Russets: Mine and a photo of some Golden Russets from specialtyproduce.com.

It’s nice to see a russet in there. That’s probably Ashmead’s Kernel, though occasionally we’ll see small quantities of Golden Russet or Hudson’s Golden Gem being sold around here. All russets are a treat, so I'm not particular about which variety it is. They don’t look like much, but inside they’re delicious. Peel them and enjoy some sweet, nutty flesh that is somewhat different than most run-of-the-mill apples.

Stripey mysteries

Stripey.jpg

Up next are these little stripeys. What are they? There are lots of striped apples out there, green over green. Too late for Gravensteins and too early for Jonagolds, which have a similar look right off the tree. Could be Honeycrisp, though the red stripes on those are usually more prominent. In fact, one of these is distinctly dull enough that it could be an early Fuji.

After tasting them, the last suspicion was confirmed: early Fuji for one (too early to pick those, IMHO). The second one had bright white, crumbly flesh inside. Upon tasting it, I came to the distinct impression that it was a Red Delicious, Mollie’s Delicious, or some other progeny of big red. Red Delicious apples in the store are completely flat in flavor (they might as well be made of plastic), but if you get one just off the tree, they can be good. Thick skin, crumbly light inside, and that faint taste resembling artificial sweetener: definitely in the Delicious family and this one was actually enjoyable.

MolliesSPecialtyProduce.jpg
Here is a photo of some Mollie's Delicious (a Red Delicious relative) at a market. Looks similar, so that may be what my apple was also. Source: specialtyproduce.com.

Macs

Mac.jpg

These ones are McIntoshes, I think. They could be Jonathans, but we’ve been seeing more Macs recently on the West Coast and they should be ripening now. McIntoshes are the most popular apple in other regions of North America (particularly the Northeast and Canada), while their relatives like Macouns and Cortlands are also popular in some of those places. On the West Coast, we like a little more sweetness or fullness in our favorite apples, but I won’t knock a Mac. Great apple.

Gala

Gala.jpg

This is a Gala. It’s redder than some, but you can see that buff yellow underneath. I’ll taste this one in a few days and correct the post if I’m wrong, but I’m not. People like Galas, but most people don’t know much about apples, so they don't have much of a reference point for comparison. I’ll gladly eat a fresh picked Gala that’s actually ripe, and this is getting into their season. But compared to better choices, the supermarket ones are fairly plain in flavor.

Newtown Pippin

Green.jpg

Here is a Newtown Pippin. It looks like a Granny Smith. But for one thing, anyone picking a Granny this early in the season should be strung up; that’s a waste of a good apple that tastes much better picked late. For another thing, this has the russeting on top. It’s sour like the Granny and should have a piney taste right now. Pippins were old-time storage apples and they taste much better when they’ve been sitting in a cold place for another month or two. Even so, it’s more of a cooking apple. We’ll probably eat this one, but if I had a box of them, I’d want to store them in a cool place until the flavor chills out.

The Gnarly Gem

Mystery.jpg

And then I noticed this one. Green, red, and gnarly. Not only that, but it has a russet pattern on the sides that makes my heart skip a beat. I turn it around, looking for something I don’t see: golden orange. But one thing is certain; this is a dense apple. It is noticeably heavier than anything else here. Could it be what I think it might be? Even without a splash of golden orange, there’s still a chance…

HolyGrail.jpg

When I cut it and smell it, I’ll know for sure. The British can guess what I’m thinking. They get these every year, the finest apple in Britain, but it’s exceedingly rare to see one here. I even tried to grow one of these trees when I lived in a cool climate. It’s been several years since I’ve seen one, which is one reason I completely missed the possibility at first. I grab the cutting board and knife.

Crunch: there it is. Picked a little green, perhaps, but a bit of starchiness won’t bother me. I’m going to love this. I cut it into slices and pop the first one in my mouth. Very dense. And sweet! And tart! I’m overwhelmed by the aroma of that flavor. It’s like citrus and pineapple and vanilla all spinning around the flavor of a really, really good apple.

This is a Cox Orange Pippin, the real deal, from the bottom of a random grab bag of apples. I wish I had a bag of these, but I’m thrilled to find even one. I quickly eat half of it before I can stop myself, give the dog a taste, and then save the other half for my kids when they get home. Many people believe Cox is the world’s best apple. And right now, it’s hard to disagree.

Wow what a wonderful post! I love apple but but didn't now the name of all these varieties, I've also lots of Apple plant but don't know the name, have a look this is my garden apple but don't know the name.

20180907_090125.jpg

You know sir ,in England most of people grows apple but it's there hoby not to for eat , lot's of apple fall down but no body take this. Really it's looking wonderful when the tree is full of Apple. Very glad to see your wonderful varieties of Apple post, loved this.

That's beautiful. Not many apples get that red, but without seeing and tasting it, I'd be hard pressed to say what kind it is. Also, there is a lot of variation from one region to another, so you may have a kind that is not familiar to me.

I have time that I do not know what it is to enjoy a tasty apple. Hey don @donkeypond. I did not know there was a lot of apple with a very peculiar name in my country. I only ask for one red or green apple, although the two have different flavors, red is usually sweeter, while green has a more acidic flavor but also delicious.

The novel of the blood sucking bees is already finished, it was that I was a bit far from Steemit and I lost a bit of the farandula.

The bees will be back soon to finish the story. Still 4 more segments of it remaining!

I hope the next chapter of the #steemitnovela @donkeypond should invent a label that is exclusively for #steemitnovela that is used by authors who write original novel of their own audit.

Well some countries or regions are lucky to have apple trees grown unlike Nigeria. Apples don't grow here, they imports it, and solutions has not been find to the soils since i was a kid up till now.

We dont choose apple like you over there, although its not that scarce at supermarkets and some fruits store but i only know just two types that i dont even know their name and the price is even hike more than the other so i dont even bother to have a favourite. Apple is apple here.

You probably have some other great fruits, though. It's the same here. A tropical fruit is a tropical fruit here and we don't get many choices of those (nor do I know all of their varieties), while you might have many more.

Waoh, I read it all from the farm boy perspective, I never knew apples 🍎 have so much as this variety, all we do here is eat, so I wouldn't know which is grav or honeycrisb, am saving this and sending to one of my friend.
Nigerian farmers are also buying in on growing apples here.

The revolution to plant all crops irrespective of the nations weather is taking everywhere.

Nice picture. It's much warmer there and apples are a temperate fruit that needs some chill. So there are a few varieties (such as Anna and Dorsett Golden) that can do well in near-tropical conditions, but others that probably cannot handle that climate.

Excellent review, my friend and now a lot of varieties of apples, which differ in taste and extent of maturation. For example, in our country is harvesting apples of autumn and winter varieties for storage for the winter, now they are still a bit stiff, but as they become more delicious and sweeter. Thank you @donkeypong

Nice. I love harvesting apples.

How interesting. I am an apple feign! I mean I have to control myself to eat just one per day! I eat them in salads, sandwiches, muffins, with PB, nuts or in a smoothie is great! Apples are just delicious! YUM!

Apple nuts, they call us. :)

Hello Friend how are you? I did not know that there are so many different names for several different apples, in Venezuela we only had two red and green types, due to the crisis that my country is going through, I have not tried an apple in years, say fruit vendors that are very expensive, and So there are many things that have disappeared because they are simply so costly that they do not risk selling them so as not to lose, or if they are imported things they no longer bring them to the country.

Bun post ate always, you have several apples you should cook with them or eat them and enjoy them.

Waiting for the next part of the novel, greetings!

You seem to be an expert in apple, I noticed there are many kinds of apples, never really felt the difference of them though haha. Haven't eat much apple ever since I got my braces. But nice apple article :D

A Kazakh friend told me in Almaty that the first apple was grown in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Yes, that's where they come from originally! Bummer about the braces, but I'm sure you'll be glad in time that you got your teeth straightened (I never did). :)

Good for you because I’m doing for the second time 😂

Talking about apples, I have one question: have you ever used apples as one of your creative process writing methods? I've seen in a movie (I forgot the title, hufft!) an author put apples to rotten at the desk to write smoothly. What do you think?

By the way, thanks for the catalog. Very informative @donkeypong

Fascinating idea and I'd never considered it. I could put one on my desk and label it "muse". I'll have to think about that!

I will wait for an update about your plan because I also wonder what effect the apple has on the creative process of an author.

We have a big harvest of apples of different kinds this year.
A couple of varieties I recognized in your photos)

Enjoy them!

Your apples look awesome as usual.... we had a small crop of Empire this year. Still super delicious.

That's a gorgeous apple!

I also really like apples and also my children, I often buy apples in the markets, what are honey apples that I really like, but I don't know where the apples come from my area.

I'm familiar with Newton pippin, the gala and the McIntoshes, in Africa we do not have variety of apples like this, except for a dwarf russet and the McIntoshes which are expensive. I guess you've tasted all these variety of apple really lol but your review of some of them is funny, which will you say it's the best?

My favorites are Gravenstein and Cox Orange Pippin, both hard to find. And there are many kinds I have not yet tasted.

I love apples but only if they are hard and crisp - I love me some Granny Smith. Very interesting review thank you

I love apples one of my very favorite fruits also the juicy fruits like orange watermelon I love all fruits in general.

Actually, i watched a documentary some days ago that said that free radicals increase the life span because they tax the immune system.

And then they said that anti oxidants decrease that additional life span because they take away those free radicals.

Basically they said "eat healthy and you will die sooner"

And normally that documentation series is valid and never says wrong stuff but I really just can't believe that I die sooner by eating healthy food lmao.

That makes no sense, I agree. Our bodies evolved to eat whole, healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and lean meats.

apples are my favorite fruits. Actually, it help me to weight loss and it gives me lot of energy. Especially it contains many vitamins.

However, could you possibly do a blog on wheat please? there's a lot of back and forth on if it's good or bad now with books like Wheat Belly and Grain Brain suggesting that wheat causes brain damage and has a drug like effect on the body. i personally tried to go wheat free, only by the third day i was suffering from full body shaking, severe joint and muscle pain (the kind that feels like being stabbed), headache, nausea, and blurred vision. i looked it up after going to the ER to find that it's called wheat withdrawal.

i chose to try going wheat free because whenever i ate it (mainly oatmeal) i had chest and abdominal pain that was only relieved through peppermint tea and burping.

Maybe you should blog about it. I don't get too deeply into food posts (mostly just fruits and vegetables). I don't have an opinion on wheat, which may be good for some and not for others.

Thank you for such a thorough review on the different apples. Had no idea there were so many with different characteristics and tastes.

Good to know.

This article and numerous ones I have run in to today is a prime example why I love our Platform. Having the freedom to blog about what we choose. And not being tied down to a particular niche.

As a long term Niche blogger ,I am so refreshed by the Steemit blogging "landscape". And even wrote a Post earlier today about what I call "Free Flow Blogging" and how Steemit is changing the way the internet views conventional blogging

Thanks again for your own type of free flow blogging @domkeypong :)

I would love now to taste an apple type I clearly distinguish. Because my distinction was on colours. The green, the red, and the red-green.

I loved to taste the red orange gripping to discover why it is believed to be the world's best.
The apples are nice looking

We all know that following Apple follows a lot of energy in our body. Vitamin K and vitamins C and other ingredients. Apple helps reduce our body weight. And to our heart is very good. Eating apples has a lot of energy to control diabetes. We get a lot of these huge benefits from the Apples diet. Therefore, we can see that there is a great demand for the world market. It is found in the market of many different types of apples. Thank you very much for presenting a valuable letter like this.

Love these post so informative. I have an apple tree that grew twice as big and light green apples than the seed it came from which was a yellow pink and small apples from a small tree. Now I know why my apple tree has different apples its not just because of the fertilizer and care I give my tree it will just likely produce something unique and my apples came out tasty sweet and light.

Sweet fruit. Apple is my favourite. Delicious apples are great if you consume very fresh apples. Apples are low on the glycaemic index thanks to their fibre content. This, together with their high flavonoid content, may help to improve insulin sensitivity, which is important both for weight management and preventing diabetes.

However, Apples are my favourite fruit. Also every since I was young I was fortunate enough to eat an apple everyday ( unless we forgot to buy them or special occasions ) actually even till this day ( 16 years old ) my mum always cuts an apple up and gives it first thing in the morning so I can have it for breakfast. It's gotten to the point where I can't go a 3 day without having an apple. And to top it off I am a huge apple fan boy ( guilty is charged )

As well, I had lot of benefits. It helped me gain my lost energy quickly. No constipation. Great affrodiasiac. It kept me away from doctors very true. Good for bad breath. wonderful appetiser. Benefits of apple are limitless.

Yep @pranto agreed

Apples, being rich in fiber, help in the digestive process. Regular consumption of apples ensures smooth bowel movements and helps in preventing constipation and various stomach disorders. 2.Cancer Prevention: The role of apples in cancer prevention has been a subject of study for some time, and while they have shown moderate improvement in various types of cancer, particularly breast and colon cancer, the most significant discoveries have been regarding lung cancer. 3.Digestive Health: One of the most essential and overlooked parts of human health is the beneficial bacteria living throughout our body. Apples specifically help improve the functioning of the bacteria living inside of our large intestine, and early studies show that apples change the metabolism within the digestive tract, and change the balance of bacteria, which leads to improved health by maximizing nutrient uptake and eliminating harmful bacteria and toxins.

I love apples but I was instructed to peal the skin, because allegadly apples are heavily sprayed with pesticides and although there's a great amount of vitamins in the skin, if the apples are not organic the damage is greater than the benifit. What's your opinion on that?

@donkeypong, You have mentioned here various types of apples. It's a really valuable article. I've often heard about Australian apples. In my country, a green apple tree appears on the trees. Its name is pears. It's very stiff. Much too much. But it's fresh. Apples imported from Australia and other countries are not strong enough to eat from chemicals in the country. Therefore, many people prefer apple to eat in our country and there is a high demand in the market.

Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. Therefore, many people prefer apple to eat in our country and there is a high demand in the market.

All apples have nutritional benefits and can be consumed as part of a heathy, balanced diet. However, there is some evidence to suggest that Granny Smith apples may be at the top of the list

Great,
If we are hungry, then burgers or pizzas will be hand in hand. The stomach did not think the body was full. However, this is a very wrong idea. In fact, these foods are pushing our body into worse. So, thousands of problems are binding on the body. In 2004, more than 100 foods in America were studied.
image
Basically, this study was done to know how much antioxidant is in the diet. Of these, red and green apples are in the 12th and 13th positions respectively. So let's see, some of Apple's qualities help keep us healthy.

The American Association for Cancer Research has said, playing apple will reduce the chances of pancreatic cancer by about 23%. Because there is a large number of flavonols in the apple. Colonel researchers also found some of the ingredients in apples, known as tritrepenoids. This ingredient stops cancer cells in liver, breast, and colon. National Cancer Institute in the US researches show that the amount of fiber in apple helps prevent coronary cancer.

Sweet fruit!
I love to eat apple.
Very nice sharing dear donkeypong.

Apples are extremely rich in antioxidants that help to protect our cells from free radical damage caused by factors such as pollution, cigarette smoke, UV rays and even inflammation within the body, often as a result of a poor diet or some medications.

I love apples :) upvoted

This is absolutely gorgeous!

Evidence doesn't support that associate apple on a daily basis keeps the doctor away; but, the little fraction folks adults World Health Organization eat associate apple on a daily basis do seem to use fewer prescription medications.” ... Since apples area unit regarding eighty fifth water by weight, they will facilitate fill you up while not heaps of calories.

wow... You know your apples. I only know that there are a lot varieties. I couldn't put a name to one, even to save my life. haha..

i like apple most. when i see apple my mouth full of water

I really enjoyed your post. I love apples and I believe that most of them in the stores here are not fully ripe. They are SO much better when they are ripe. One year I changed which store I shopped in most, simply because they had more variety of apples than the other stores and the majority of them were big and ripe. This makes me want to go stroll in the apple section right now. I could nearly smell them as I read. I love the russet photo. Not familiar with those.

I like apples that are sweet and juicy @donkeypong and we just import them. Sometimes we get a non-juicy variety and I do not know if it is just like that or due to the apple being old because of transit.

I also wish to have an apple plant. But in my region can't grow apple plants because of weather.

Delicious apples are great if you consume very fresh apples

Yummy apples.. 👌

Boy, you do love your apples :) I've never looked this close at how many varieties a fruit can have

I was going to tell you about Granny Smiths but you told me not to because it's too early.

Man, now there's a man who knows his apples! I love this. Gonna try growing some on our land for sure!

Besides my grown sons, the only things I miss being in Mexico (as opposed to BC) are apples. I've bought several here, and they look so good in the store, they feel firm, but when I bite into them, they are mushy and woody and just gross; so disappointing! I'm literally drooling over your post. Feels kind of weird actually.
