My friend Mike and I heard a rumor about a place that serves a decent lunch for less than 1$. Of course, we went hunting for this place. Not so much because we needed a cheap meal, but because curiosity over weather it would taste good or not.
I will say now that the soup was surprisingly good! Sonji Guk (Korean blood cake soup) consists of congealed blood cake and bitter greens. Also, a whole lot of black pepper. I would say the main flavor pallet of this soup is black pepper, which goes very well with the rich meatiness of the blood cake.
Admittedly, when I saw the place, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go in. This place was so local and looked so old. I wandered if I would be the first foreigner in the old man’s shop. “Good food is risky,” as Anthony Bourdaine would say.
I am so glad we took the risk. The shy old man who runs the shop seemed happy to feed us. Just outside his tiny shop, a giant cauldron of soup boils. I wonder if the fire is ever shut off. And we ate so well. When we left, we paid our 1,000wo, and felt happy to have discovered such an odd and interesting place.
I think we will be back here often.
Watch the video posted above to experience the meal with us.
Also, go to his shop if you get the chance! I am worried that this place won’t be around for long. Here is a link to the location.
