...so I ended up making pizza!
I escaped the professional kitchen almost ten months ago, and haven't cooked much since. I lost all love towards cooking and I have been avoiding it like the plague. Only times I have cooked during this year, have been when I'm in the countryside and want to feed my whole family. I don't yet feel the itch and urge to cook, but I am taking baby steps back to the kitchen, but not towards a professional one!
Today I heard my little brother was going make pizza, and I went to lurk to see if he has any idea about what he is doings. Long story short, I had to take over. Otherwise I might have not bothered but I wanted pizza too. He wasn't going to knead the dough at all, and didn't want to listen to my advice. So I made him cut up the toppings, while I started to knead the dough, all the while giving him random little tips for better pizza making.
"Our masonry oven is not in working condition, which would be perfect for pizza, so put the baking tray in the oven to heat up while we prepare the pizzas."
Kneading the dough to a silky smooth goodness made me remember where my love for cooking came from. I have been baking with mom and grandma from the age of three. I love doing things with my hands, I call it the Dough Therapy. I guess the chef job was a bit of a misstep in a way that I don't actually love cooking, more so, I love doing things with my hands to both for my benefit and the people that are close to me.
When I knead dough or knit, I'm usually making something for a loved one and I enjoy the process when it's not forced, but from my own initiative. While I have my hands busy, I feel my brain calming down. I can watch Netflix and knead a dough or knit wool socks for hours on end. But if I try to just sit still and watch Netflix, it's very hard for me to concentrate and I get fidgety.
I used to knit in school, and the teachers that didn't understand that I listen better if I have something to do with my hands, were furious about it. They used to say to me that I have to put the knit work down to look at the slideshow or what ever they were presenting, but I refused. Instead, I would look at the teacher dead in the eyes and keep knitting at the same time, muscle memory is a fantastic thing. Needless to say, I have a huge problem with authority, and that has always gotten me in trouble. Though I always keep my head, either the easy way, or the hard way.
Sorry, I got wayyyyy sidetracked, so let's call this a free write, shall we? That is a great excuse to just vomit out everything how it assembles in your head. Awesome.
Isn't working with your hands (and I mean working on something useful - not sliding left or right on Tinder) the most satisfying thing in the world?
I never could understand people when they say they are bored - how the fuck can you be bored? You have two most advanced products of the evolution: the brain and the opposable thumbs - go fricking do something.
But I totally get you when you say that cooking for a job ruined cooking for you. Working, especially working for somebody else, tends to suck the joy out of most things, even if you enjoy them.
I would never ever start making knives for a living, or if I was forced to do so, I would probably find something else for a hobby. Maybe go back to painting or something like that...
That being said, that pizza does look nice 🤗 you should cook more, especially for yourself.

So satisfying, and for me, it's not even about the end result, I enjoy the actual making something with my hands. Often when I finish a knit, I just throw it in a box and start on a new one immediately, because I want to get back to doing.
If and when I am bored, I always know it's my own damn fault and I'm just too lazy to start something. I always feel better when I get back to working with my hands, even if it's just something like a plain grey wool socks.
I think I will slowly try and start to get back to cooking, but I have never liked cooking just for myself, yet don't want to invite anyone over either 😅

You could do something like a secret Santa-chef, you make one amazing meal a week and then you sent it to a random person in your neighbourhood.
No why, or from whom, just a "Enjoy your meal" on a Post-it.
That way you get to cook not for yourself and you don't have to have people disturbing your wolf lair.
In a few years or so you would become a legend. People would worship you like a goddess and schools would be named after the Secret Santa-chef.
You could change so many lives. Noone knowing it was you, except you and me.
😂

I think that sounds slightly disturbing! How to you propose I would deliver the food, through the mailbox?
I think I would have better success doing that with the knitting thing, send woolsacks to random people. I have actually thought of leaving mittens in random places during the wintertime, with little notes inside saying "finders keepers", or something along those lines.

Well, I didn't say it would be easy. Obviously, you will have to polish up the rough edges of the plan.
I guess socks and mittens would work also, but I wouldn't expect any school named after you 😂

Along the line in this wonderful piece, i saw this nugget; “muscle memory is a fantastic thing” yes muscle memory is a good evidence that your mind is present in what you’re doing at present, sometimes I do found myself present in the body at something but my inner being isn’t there at all.
I also glad to know you better, you love doing things willingly than being obligated or commanded, you helped mom and grandma in baking from the age of three . You love doing things with your hands.
This is amazing and lovely because those act of your early years in life has molded your personality today. Thanks for sharing with us. I love the pizz!

Because it fit easier to the baking pan with another pizza. Pizza doesn't have to be round, don't be that limited!
