Getting The Most Life From Your Lettuce

in food •  7 years ago

It has been a sad gardening year for me. I jumped in early, had a great start, then a hoard of grasshoppers of Biblical proportion descended upon us... I got a little garlic, a couple onions and taters and that was about all little plague left behind. As a result I have been buying lettuce all summer. If you are a gardener you know what a shame-filled confession that was... Let me attempt to redeem myself with a useful tip to share.

I would buy a clam-shell box of mixed lettuce, pay a little extra to get organic, then feed the last half to the chickens because it got slimy. Internet to the rescue, I found this trick tried it and it works like a charm!

First wash your lettuce, pulling the leaves apart. (For iceberg, core the stem end, rinse well then chop it up. If you buy the pre-mixed salad, this still works, just rinse and spread it on the paper towels.)

Next let the leaves drain for a few minutes. You want them moist but not dripping.

Cut out any spots that you do not want to eat

Spread the leaves out on paper towels, just one or two leaves deep.013.jpg

Put the whole thing in a ziplock baggie, and suck as much air out as you can. When you want a salad, it is all washed up and ready to use! I can get up to 10 days before it loses its crispness now. Not bad!015.jpg

Nice ,do you know it is real easy to regenerate lettuce?

Yes, I have used this trick too! Also works for celery!

You've got all my sympathy - had a root vole eating all my red beets and celery last year... Salat went great here this year - still harvesting! And since I like to safe time, I usually harvest enough for 2 or 3 days, wash it all and keep it in the fridge - will try out your version with the papertowel! Cheers from Germany

The lifetime locals tell me the plague comes around about every 10 years... yay... We have something here called "Azure Standard" that delivers fresh organic produce all the way out here in the boondocks, so at least I have a great back up supply but there is nothing like fresh cut straight out of the garden. I confess, I have a bit of lettuce envy now... lol!

handing some over - here you go :-)

great article

Thank you! Now you have my attention, and I see you fit the profile for my "Fish Net Stalkings." Let me offer you a little tip, try to give replies that actually engage the poster or other readers, try to start a conversation. The rewards for a good back and forth in the comments are perhaps the easiest to get. And when I go stalking minnows, I look at comments, replies, and blog posts to see if you are REALLY trying or just phoning it in. Expect me to review your blog tomorrow... :) (Go check my blog for the post "Introducing Fish Net Stalkings" if you want to figure out what the heck I am talking about... lol!
