Differences between American food and European.

I am periodically compelled to wade into online conversations about the supposed differences between American food and European (or simply UK) counterparts. Yesterday involved a classic "meme" featuring two labels for Quaker Instant Oats -- the American one containing a bunch of "chemicals" and the UK version containing only oats, fruit, and sugar (and "natural flavoring", which we'll get to in a second).

The first thing you need to know (assuming you haven't heard me talk about this a bunch of times already) is that US labelling requirements and UK / EU labelling requirements are very, very different.

The US requires labels to include breakdowns of sub-ingredients, written using their scientific names. The EU didn't have any such labelling requirements until around 2017, and when they started requiring more information on nutrition labels, they adopted a standard where all the "chemicals" are listed as E-Numbers, instead of using their scientific names.

This, alone, probably accounts for a huge amount of confusion and it certainly empowers people like Food Babe to make absurd claims about food that most people aren't knowledgeable enough to counter.

But beyond that, you can simply visit the UK and US sites for Quaker Oats and find standardized ingredients lists. You'll also discover that the US has dramatically more options than the UK does, but that's a discussion for another time.
