VEGAN MUNCHIES 🌮😋 (a twist on Western NY tradition)

In Rochester, New York they're famous for a dish called the "garbage plate".

Right there, that's a "red hot" plate. Which basically means a hot dog plate. But there's also a different kind of hot dog called the "white hot". So you wouldn't ever call it a "hot dog plate", you'd call it a red hot plate. There's a whole lingo to it.

Someone who walked in off the street and tried to order would most likely stand out as a noob in some way.

The typical plate is the cheeseburger plate. Basically, you pick a meat and generally two sides (between home fries, macaroni salad, and beans). And unless you say otherwise, you get onions and mustard and the ground beef "hot sauce" piled on top.

So "cheeseburger plate, mac salad home fries" would get you this.

I seem to remember mustard drizzled all across the whole plate, but maybe I did that myself.

Yesterday I was cooking for myself, and accidentally made something that reminded me of a garbage plate; like an Indian inspired vegan garbage plate:

My food photography wasn't great there, but it was yummy!

Raw onion would have put it up a level, but I didn't have any.

The lentils are a little hack I've been doing.

There are a few different brands similar to this, and an assortment of all the classic Indian dishes (channa masala, etc).

A package usually costs $3-4, which is kind of a lot, relative to how much you get. But if you put it on top of a pile of rice, it elevates the rice into a solid meal, so I find that they're worth having in the cupboard.

In this case I was low on rice, so that's how the steak fries made their way onto the plate, and how the thing that reminded me of a garbage plate was born.

I'd like to make a proper vegan garbage plate sometime. Would be simple. Vegan mayo in the mac salad, and Beyond Burger patties or whatever kind of veggie hot dog.

I must have really missed Rochester or something, because later I veganized buffalo wings:

It's basically Gardein crispy tenders fried to a golden brown and tossed in buffalo sauce. The bleu cheese is my own creation-- vegan mayo mixed with just a little almond butter and some vinegar, seasoned.

Those were yummy too.
