BB Burgers in Chiang Mai: A fun, yet relatively expensive "diner" experience

in food •  6 years ago

This is yet another one of those places that is located in the ultra-tourist part of town so the fact that it was a bit expensive was not at all surprising to me. However, the menu is a nice collection of diner favorites and they have done a good job with having a comfortable area to sit in a great part of town for people-watching.

Just in case you don't know what i mean by the "diner experience:" Diners are primarily Americana and they focus on burgers, fries, hot dogs, milkshakes and what not. Before McDonalds was invented around 1953 these places were all independently owned and quite similar all over the country despite the fact that they had different owners.

I was the only person there which I thought was strange since it was 8pm but whatever! I had heard they do hot dogs properly here and that is what I came for. I ordered a chili-dog and a coke zero and the total was 170B, which is around $6 - so yeah, this is expensive for Thailand.

The ladies behind the counter were using grills and I saw the sausage that they were using before they cooked it and yes, it was not your standard crappy hot-dog that is normally sold in this country. It appeared to be locally made because there was not label on the bag. They toasted the bun, grilled the onions and then they microwaved the chili - which i will not fault them for.

The end result is without question, the best hot dog I have ever had in Thailand. It wasn't fantastic but to be fair I lived in Chicago and NYC for a while so my standards for hot-dogs are pretty high. I was happy with it and appreciated the friendly service as well as the overall vibe of the establishment.

As you can see there are a lot of other health food options available here as well. I think they face an uphill battle though because Burger King just opened across the street from them and their prices are quite similar.

All in all, i think I would stop here again if I happened to be in the area. The food was good, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere is quite different than a vast majority of other restaurants in the area. They are open until 3am so I think there is a strong chance that this place caters to the late-night drunken idiot crowd.

Chicago and New York? Fogetaboudit. Detroit is where it is at. Lafayette and American side by side serving up some of the best dogs in the state. Head up the road an hour to Flint for some more knock your socks off Coney dogs. My personal favorite though is a Kogel Vienna over a campfire. If they don't have those in heaven, I don't wanna go. Glad you found something that is decent there. You are right though, $6 is a lot for a chili dog.

I just need someone over here to get whatever the dogs are that they sell at baseball stadiums. I know those aren't the creme de la creme but there is just something about the meat mixture in those bad boys that is so much more flavorful. The dog I had at this place had some really strong flavors in it, almost as though they were trying to compensate for the inferior meat with over-the-top seasoning. I wouldn't order it again.

Ah, okay, that kind of makes sense. Yeah, those Ballpark franks are pretty darn good. I think a lot of places also use the Hebrew National ones now too. I've been to a couple of hot dog joints in Columbus when I was visiting my in-laws that are pretty fantastic. As well as the great places we have in Michigan. Maybe one day someone will have an "in" that can ship them over some good quality dogs!

I really love hot dogs, and the way it is prepared is really interesting, I will be definitely trying these hot dog on my next trip to Thailand

Sounds like you were there way too early and catering for the after 12 closed bar nutters is their market. At least they did it properly and you know your hot dogs and burgers.
