Dadar gulung is one among the popular snack/dessert in Indonesia. You can find this sweet dessert all over the place in Indonesia by the street food, in traditional market, desserts shop, traditional or special cake shop.
I was born and raised in Indonesia, so in my childhood time I can find this sweet dessert easily, but after I live abroad, there’s no way to find them in any store here in my town.
I was so craving for it and end up browsed the recipe from google.
And this one was my result of an afternoon experiment 😄

- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbs butter
Additional ingredient to colour in light green ( or whatever colour you prefer such light pink, purple, yellow )
DIRECTIONS
Coconut Filling
- Put butter in a pan, add in the water, sugar, bring to boil over medium heat.
- Adjust the heat to low ( about 5-10 minutes ) until the mixture almost reach syrup.
- Add in the grated coconut, salt, and vanilla extract.

- Remove from the heat, and continue until all the batter is used up.
- Place the crepe on flat surface/plate and top with about 2 tbs of coconut filling somewhere around the bottom of the crepe in a long shape.
- Fold the crepe over the filling, then fold over the left and the right side.
- Roll it up tightly in to cylinder.
Serve!! 😁
You can always refrigerate for later too!

In Malaysia, we call this Kuih Lenggang, where we never use coloring. The green colour and aroma is actually extracted from our local plant called Pandan Leaves. It is more original, aromatic and natural.

you’re right....
My mom and grandma never used food colouring when they make this kueh. and they normally use fresh grated coconut too, and of course the aroma and the taste much better. but as I live in the small town in Canada, is very difficult for me to find pandan leaves and fresh coconut.
I used to live in Batam, quite close to Malaysia and often took a ferry to go Singapore and Malaysia, one thing I like about Malaysia is that you guys has a lot of nice food, I miss those nasi lemak and many type of kueh. makes me drooling haha
