Steam cassava cake (ongol-ongol) is one of the Indonesian popular snack or street food (jajan pasar) made by steaming the grated cassava mixture and then rolled them in grated coconut.
I was so craving for Ongol-Ongol cake for quite sometimes, been looking for the right ingredients but I can’t! I’m supposed to use some of the plain jelly powder, and yet I can’t find them in any store in my town. or..maybe I was just clumsy, I don’t know!
So yesterday, I was opening my pantry and I saw that I have few packs of jelly powder, but they are all fruity flavours. And I was like...🤔🤔 ok lemme try to use flavours jelly powder instead, then I won’t need to use any of food colouring. There’s no harm for me trying the new sensation of taste! Lol
I believe that there are so many recipes of Ongol-Ongol cake. I always had them when I still live in Indonesia, some of them has a very soft texture but still chewy, and some of them has more thickened and solid texture, but they are still chewy too. This time, I tried to made my own recipe without look up other recipe from internet or somewhere else, and the results was satisfied me enough.
Ok, ok...let’s get the recipes, I talked too much, already!
INGREDIENTS
- 600 g grated cassava
- 3 tbsp glutinous rice flour
- 6 tbsp sugar
- 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
- salt to taste
- 60 g unsweetened grated coconut
- 3 types of jelly powder (I used lime, lemon, and strawberry flavours)
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Steam The Grated Coconut
- Place the 60 g unsweetened grated coconut into a bowl with a pinch of salt to taste, stir to mix and steam for about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare The Cake Mixture

- Pour about 40 g 3 type of jelly power in different bowls.
- Add in 2 tbsp of sugar in each bowl.
- Devide grated 600 g cassava into 3, and add them into each bowl.
- Add in 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract into each bowl.
- Take turn to mix them one by one until well combined.
Step 3: Shaping The Cake
Using your palms hand, shape the cassava mixture into round shape.
Step 4: Steam The Cake
steam the cake for about 20 minutes until cooked through.
Step 5: Topping The Cake
While the cake is still hot, roll them in the grated coconut.
=> OPTIONS: Feel free if you want to skewered them into bamboo skewers. It is up to you how to serve them! 😎😁
