What is an Eating Disorder?
Eating disorder describes illness characterized by irregular eating habits and severe concern about body weight and shape. Eating dsturbance may include inadequate or excessive food intake which may damage an individual's well being. Eating disturbance can develop during any stage in life but occurs predominantly during teen years or early adulthood.Eating disturbance may coexist with depression or substance abuse.In America,there are about 8 million with disorde r of which 7 million are women and 1 million men.
Types Of Eating Disorder
There different types of eating disorder of which Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder(BED) are the most common
Anorexia Nervosa
An indidual suffering from Anorexia Nervosa will have pocresphobia(fear of gaining weight) and an unrealistic perception of body image.Thus, tending to consume less food and view themselves as overweight.Anorexia Nervosa can lead to multi-organ failure,brain damage, and consequently death of the individual.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia Nervosa is quite related to Anorexia Nervosa the difference just being that an individual suffering from Bulimia Nervosa tends to eat excessively and compensate this behaviours by forceful vomitting, excessive exercise,or extreme use of laxatives or diuretics.Individuals sufferung from bulimia like Anorexia fears weight gain and are unhappy with their body size and shape.Bulimia Nervosa may lead to severe hydration,gastrointestinal problems and heart difficulties.
Binge Eating Disorder(BED)
Individuals who suffer from BED tends to eat excessively.BED is quite different from Anorexia and Bulimia in taht there are no compensatory behaviour like fasting,forced vomitting, and excessive exercise.Individuals sufeering from BED may be obese and at risk of developing othe conditions.
