The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned against eating romaine lettuce after an E. coli outbreak made more than 50 people sick, Bloomberg reports. The contaminated lettuce came from the Yuma, Arizona region. In Alaska, new cases of the illness arose as a result of people eating whole heads, hearts, salad mixes and chopped romaine. Yuma county grows 90% of all leafy vegetables in the U.S. from November to March, Bloomberg reports. So far, cases of the outbreak have been discovered in 16 states leading to 31 hospitalizations, CNN reports. Five people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure from eating contaminated romaine lettuce.
