Eating Out in Athens : Exotic Curry Palace

in food •  7 years ago

Today, I took my good friend Damianos @thesocialpreneur and went for a food adventure. We explored the area around his office at Omonoia Square and decided to sit at a traditional Indian restaurant called "Curry Palace".

We prefer places that are not for tourists but serve native people from that region. Sometimes this approach works and sometimes not so much.

This restaurant is located at Geraniou Street , Athens and the moments you step into the door you enter another world. Low lights and a big TV that plays a Bollywood movie (?). Indian and/or Pakistani people are sitting all over the place. Some of them are eating, some are discussing and some are occupied with their mobile phones. Could they send messages to their parents or loved ones that are left behind ? Who knows …

We sat in a corner that was the least crowded. And while we were waiting for our order we could hear the sound of people talking, almost like a whisper. We couldn't hear what they said and even if we heard we wouldn't understand... We were the only westerners there…

And the smell… You couldn't help noticing the smell of curry. Always there , always present. You could close your eyes and you would be at the small packed streets of Delhi…

Step out of the dream and enter our lunch …

For starters, we had a crunchy spicy pie , that I don't know the name .

For the main dish, I took rice with kachiri beef and a pie. As you can see it was a big serving, but quality wise was mediocre. Especially the meat.

And it was expensive for traditional restaurant standards. I paid 11 euros and to be honest now I wonder if they had "special prices" for foreigners. I guess I'll never know…

What I know is that I won't prefer it again. The previous Indian restaurant we went a month ago it was the same quality, but half the price. Of course , I don't regret the choice . Let's say I paid a ticket for a mental journey to a place far away … And journey was fun …

And hopefully, I took you together to that journey.

And until we explore more exotic places …

Nice article and pictures. That just made me so hungry for Indian food!
I'd like to come to Athens sometime for sure.

I will be happy to show you around . Steem on !!! :)

When we have a new, appetizing dish, it is not a fact that it is of good quality and cooked in accordance with the sanitary conditions. As for the price, the person always goes to where the prices are reasonable. One item in different stores is sold at different prices, it's not a secret. And nothing can be done about this.

My current job is in the "food industry" so I am a little bit sensitive on that subject.
On the other hand I have been inside so many kitchens and I keep the bar pretty low . :)

Trying new dishes is not so bad. Maybe I'm too biased about other cooks. Studying different cuisines is something! I dare not ask about your "current job", as far as I understand, you rarely try at home. Is your stomach satisfied with this attitude to yourself?

I actually cook a lot . I must visit many restaurants for my job and their kitchens so I’ve learnt over the years not to expect too much. But on the other hand my own kitchen is not that cleaner. In the end just focus on the food . :)

From your lips comes wisdom and experience. Thank you. You have much to learn! Honestly, it's only thanks to Steemit's platform that my view of life has changed. I once again thank you for your attention and support.

Thank you. We live in times where we can do things that we like , blog about them and make money. How cool is that ?
I feel lucky , blessed and humbled. :)

Perfectly understand and rejoice for you. Humbly acknowledge that at the very beginning of the road to such happiness. It is a pity that this way was opened with such a delay. But it's better late than never. Be blessed!

And it is not even late. We are still early in the game . :)
