Wow ! I made it to another one ! 63 years! Time has flown so fast it hardly seems more than 20. ha ha.... I know lots of women are reluctant to state their ages, but it has never bothered me... and by now.... I am certainly just happy to still be here !
I made the cake above that has Happy Birthday on it. Colorful ! Right ? I use to bake and decorate cakes from my home. It was fun. Since birthdays here are usually about cake of some sort, I thought I'd share a few I made.
I made the cupcakes below too. They were for a family gathering.
Back when I was making cakes for others, this was one of my favorite ones to do. It is so colorful and happy.... and who doesn't love Bert and Ernie ?? !!
I made the one below for one of my nephew's 1st birthday. There are clowns holding up the top layer.
The B on the top and the number 1 decor on the sides were homemade cookies decorated with royal icing, so they could be eaten too. I made the inside layers rainbow, so it was even more beautiful when it was cut.

Yes ! Those tiered cupcake displays make any kind of cupcake look special. Always makes a nice presentation. I think I have 3 now, but I hardly use them anymore. What a shame ! I'll have to do better.

My sister is very special! We sometimes jump a ship together and sail around the world. She is fun like that.

I have certainly made my share through the years, but when I began I didn't have a great camera and some photos were even taken with an instamatic camera, so a lot of my photos are less than great, but I'm always still glad I at least took some. It is fun looking back.

I did enjoy them and my birthday supper and I may not need to eat now for another week ! LOL
The vinegar pie is similar (or just like what Southerners at least, call a chess pie). It does not taste at all like vinegar, but somehow the recipe needs something acidic to make it work. Some folks may use lemon, but that would certainly change the flavor. I think Vinegar Pie is a name that started back in the dark ages... hahahaha.....
1 cup margarine
3 cups regular granulated sugar
1 tablespoon of vanilla
2 tablespoons of vinegar (regular brown apple cider vinegar is what we use.
6 eggs
There were no instructions on my card. LOL... so I tell you that you mix all that together in a bowl and pour it in a pie crust.. :)
bake at 400 degrees for the first 15 minutes
...then turn down to 350 degrees.... till done.
Now there is a family recipe right? No hint of how long.... nothing, till it's done. LOL You'll just know !
I asked for the same pie a few years ago and one of my brother in-laws had a slice and thought it was good. He asked Mom what kind it was and she hesitated and said...."basically it's sugar pie" ..... to which he said....."well, I really LIKE sugar pie"

It WAS a marvelous day... sleeping in, getting ready to go, but not in a rush. Afternoon of girl talk with my 2 sisters and 2 SILs and Mom. We had such fun visiting and snibbling and of course the pies my mother made were scrumptious !
My brother then took me to supper in a restaurant of my choosing and when we arrived back at his house. He had a baby sized birthday cake for me that had 1 candle he lit for me to make a wish. He then gave me an Amazon gift card and a very funny birthday card. We sat and looked at some of the old photos he had put on a jump drive for me and reminisced about childhood things.
All in all, it was a very sweet day of celebration.

I'm sorry I am so late in seeing this, but happy birthday! I love your cakes! That is very impressive. And I love that you made the decorations on your nephew's cake out of cookies. Fondant is all the rage these days, and it is pretty, but not very tasty. Why make something not yummy on a cake? My mom used to make us Barbie cakes when we were little, because my sister and I were really into Barbies. But unlike the store bought ones - which used a fake doll made of only the upper half - my mom would use an actual (whole) Barbie. So then we got the doll after the cake was eaten. Seems cruel to tease a kid with that fake half Barbie ;)
Vinegar pie - interesting. My grandma in Tennessee makes chess pie. It seems to me to be an old-timey dessert that has gone out of fashion, which is quite a shame. Or maybe it is only that the deep south eats it, and it is unknown in Florida. But I love her chess pie - both regular and chocolate - and always look forward to having it. I hope you enjoyed yours very much. I'm sure you did.

I agree about fondant. I never thought it tasted good either, so I never used it. I never understood when it became all the rage. Sure you could make quite an amazing sculpture using it and if it was just for show, ok ! However, if it was supposed to be eaten, the flavor was quite the fail.
My Mom used to make us doll cakes too. It was a whole doll, but it was a cheaper plastic one and shorter than barbie. She would make a stacked cake with graduated layers getting smaller as it went up and she would put the doll in the top and make an icing bodice.
Vinegar and Chess Pie I am sure are the same or very close. I did enjoy my birthday. My family made it quiet the happy day for me.
