Peaches, Blackberries, and Bees, Oh My!

We took a family trip up to Howard County, Maryland to gather baskets of blackberries and boxes of tree-ripe peaches.

The farm we visited boasts several varieties of white and yellow peaches, and we chose to pick the Loring, a yellow freestone peach, with high acidity and sweetness and softball sized fruits! We also stopped for blackberries and made our way to the barn for some special treats after all of the work picking fruits!

Here are some of my favorite photos from our time at the farm. If you can't get fresh peaches and berries where you live, then just pretend that it was you who went to the farm.

Also, I'm taking any and all suggestions on peach recipes, so bring them on!

The farm's barn is also home to a small beehive, where bees come and go through a tunnel in the exterior wall.

All of these photos have me brainstorming a recipe that incorporates not only peaches, but blackberries, and honey too! Oh my!

OMG! I want to join you. I love picking fruit. I used to climb a mango tree in front of my grandma's house back in my home country.

Mangos are probably my all time favorite fruit! You are so lucky to have had that experience! Mmm so good!

That looks like so much fun! I love blackberries for pancakes and pie. I use to live near a pick your own raspberry patch. My husband's favorite food. Our first year there he spent $200 total picking and eating raspberries every
day for months. I told him he was crazy but it was his money and he was really happy.

Wow $200 worth of raspberries ought to come with at least 1 roll of tp, amirite? ;) jk, I stuffed my face too and I could totally see how I could rack up that bill if I lived close enough!

Nothing better than fresh peaches. I like to can them in plain water with a little citric acid to protect the color and texture. Then I can make cobblers or peach ice cream. Mmmmm.

Sounds like you and your family had tons of fun visiting the farm. You've got talent in photography! Love the bees, looks like they were very busy. They are so hardworking, lol.

Yeah, so much fun! Thanks girl - yeah i loved watching those busy workers doing their busy bee thang. So mission focused!!

Also, what do you think about making a jigsaw puzzle out of that first bees photo?

Ooh I'd love to hear your recipes too! So jealous of your built-in peach supply!! I don't know what I would do with myself! (Except wear a bib all summer long). :)

Well it's just the one tree at the moment but it gives quite a few peaches all at once and we can't eat them all before they go off. So need to do something with them :)

Thanks @abitowhit- yeah I don't know how good bees would feel on the way down. But I'm sure glad they pollinate all these yummy fruit trees to ale something I want to eat!! :)

Right! I have a patch of unwanted thistles but the honey bees love them. I just noticed they were full of bees so I will let them feast away.

as a bee parent you need to make so many sacrifices ;)

I've been eating 2-3 peaches a day because they seem to be in peak season (at the supermarkets at least) right now...my favourite are the donut peaches..

Have you tried those?

Love them! So cute and squat! I do, however, favor the softball-sized juice makers :) Yummmmm...as juice drips everywhere...

hehehe that's where we're different! The juice dripping down makes my chin and hands itch something crazy..donut peaches are easy and comfy to eat for me ;)

Well at least with the both of us, there's always demand for both types of peaches hehehe

It was indeed!! Gotta love nature's buffet! Wait, we were supposed to pay for those (all with purple teeth and peach juice on our clothes). oops!

How about trying a peach and blackberry salsa :) YUM!!!!!!! Replace the tomatoes with peaches and blackberries -I have done this with strawberries and even cranberries and it turns out great :)

Oooh that sounds amazing! We ate all of the blackberries but still have loads of peaches and mangos were on sale at the store for $1 each (and they've been realllly good the last few weeks), so maybe i"ll do peach mango salsa!!?! Thanks for the idea @sunshine247!

I love their little signs with tips. High acid, low acid, etc. Very important for people who can the fruit.

This is so true @goldendawne. This place is a family farm, and they do a lot of canning (a farm store filled with canned produce), so I'm sure that they had canners in mind when making up those signs. Love local family owned places like this :)

I just found your blog through a @jerrybanfield post. Congratulations.

Here is a recipe that you might like. It is Honey Custard that is just fantastic with fresh fruit.

Beat 4 whole eggs, 1/4 c honey, 1 t vanilla, and 1/8 t salt. Heat 2 c milk to just barely simmering and whisk it slowly into the eggs. Portion out into custard cups and bake at 300F for 60 minutes with the cups sitting in a shallow pan of water. Cool to nearly room temperature before serving.

This custard is good with fresh fruit on top. Cubed peaches and blackberries are a natural combo. I also like cantaloupe and blueberries.

You can also use the custard to show off a special jar of varietal honey. In that case, serve the custard a little bit warm and lay on a generous spoonful of honey just before you bring the cups to the table. The warmth of the custard releases the floral character of the honey.

Custard is such a great idea for all of this fruit. And I've got a fresh supply of eggs, so I'm all set! Wow this sounds delicious. When I make it, I'll do a post ok? Thanks @professorbromide :)

Ack! No! Well, you do have some other amazing produce, as I saw in your recent post, so at least you've got some. However, I wish I could airmail some of these beauties over to you so you could taste how good they are!
