A Simple Dessert Called Leche Flan

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)
Hey there Steemians!

We just got our internet connection back... after seven long days! How cool is that?! (insert sarcasm)

Let's move on anyway. Yesterday was Presidents' Day in the US, so my pretty niece has no classes and requested for a home-made leche flan.

Leche flan served freshly from the steam.

What is a 'leche flan' by the way?

Generally, leche flan is what you call creme caramel, caramel pudding, or flan. In the Philippines, we call it 'leche flan'. This term originated from the Spanish flan de leche which means milk flan. This dish is made up of egg yolks and condensed milk. It can be baked, or more traditionally it is cooked by steaming it over stove top or on an open flame.

It is a custard dessert with a layer of soft caramel on top, as opposed to crème brûlée, which is pudding with a hard caramel top. --Wiki

Here is my sister's recipe of leche flan.

I have not personally done any leche flan at home, and she told me I could try to make some of it. I can use this recipe that she gave me. I am also sharing this to you all. In case, you decide to follow or use this recipe, please do update me in the future on how it turns out.

We would need the following ingredients:
  • 10 pieces of eggs
  • 1 small can of condensed milk
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of fresh milk
Procedure:

1.) Separate the egg whites and yolk. Beat the yolks and mix well. Combine in the vanilla extract, condensed milk and fresh milk. Set aside the mixture.
2.) On a mold, put the sugar in a low heat, then let it caramelized. (You can add water but it's optional.)
3.) Let it sit for about 5 minutes to cool before adding the mixture.
4.) Wrap in an aluminum foil and then steam for about 30 to 35 minutes.

Here is the finished product.
