Old New Year's Day

in food •  7 years ago

The Old New Year or the Orthodox New Year is an informal traditional holiday, celebrated as the start of the New Year by the Julian calendar. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the Old New Year falls on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar.
Although the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic officially adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, the Russian Orthodox Church continued to use the Julian calendar. The New Year became a holiday which is celebrated by both calendars.

With that in mind Happy Old New Year everyone!

Usually on this day, or rather the Old New Year eve which falls on January 13th, people would have a family dinner or get together with friends. This informal holiday is nowhere near as big as the actual New Year, but it is a fun way to end the winter holidays.
When I was little we would always have a small family dinner and often some gifts such as candy and fruits, it was also the time when people would take all their Christmas trees and decoration away.
Anyway, even though our yesterday's get together with friends wasn't inspired by this holiday it was still nice hanging out with @matt-a, @robrigo and other folks that are not on Steemit yet.

Today however was super lazy for me, I got up around 1 PM and thought why not make some pancakes and coffee and just get ready for my weekly Whaleshares curation. I think it worked out.

How interesting! This coincides with St Knut's Day!

Saint Knut's Day, is a traditional festival celebrated in Sweden and Finland on 13 January. It is not celebrated on this date in Denmark (the Knut day was moved in Sweden, not in Denmark) despite being named for the Danish prince Canute Lavard, and later also associated with his uncle, Canute the Saint, the patron saint of Denmark. Christmas trees are taken down on Tjugondag jul, and the candies and cookies that decorated the tree are eaten. In Sweden, the feast held during this event is called a Knut's party (Julgransplundring, literally "Christmas tree plundering").

Also from Wikipedia. :)
