Being Good Neighbors: Firewood for a Bucket of Food

in food •  7 years ago

Several days ago, John took a walk to the local miscelanea for a coke, noticing that much of the family of the owners were preoccupied with the task of cutting firewood, with an axe.  Having recently acquired a chainsaw, John came home, grabbed his saw and went back to handle the wood for them.  He probably saved them a days work and they were so grateful that today they sent him home with this.

The bucket filled with like a porky soup with really soft textured meat.  The soup itself is really mild in flavor.  This is considered a weekly tradition here, it's a very famous meal so it's fitting we finally tried it.  Considering the fact that I am dealing with some pretty intense detox symptoms today (probiotics will do that to you) nothing tastes right, but I could tell this is a dish I would probably like under normal circumstances.

It came with a plate with fixings and a bag of pork rinds, something that's damn near a delicacy here.

I'm still not too much a fan of pork rinds, but they are decent in this application.

So this is what happens when you are good to your neighbors, they send you home with literally a bucket of food. Living in this barrio has taught me quite a lot about community and how they interact with eachother.  I don't speak the same language as these people but we do more than enough communicating through actions and I love that.  I bring them pizza and they give me tamales.  John cuts firewood for them and they send us home with a bucket of food.  What's next? I'm excited to find out.

Very cool story! Thanks for sharing.

Community building! Sounds like you are assimilating well.

Hi, nice story!!! I'm glad you could enjoy on first hand the warm welcome Mexico offer to the foreign people. We try to be always an awesome host and help the most. I haven't read your past posts but, which part of Mexico are you visiting? And it looks like the food was carnitas or maybe barbacoa... Hope you like it. And greetings.

I live in Acapulco and have for about a year. I live in a cute little barrio full of friendly smiling faces.

Most people are inherently good and want to be good neighbours. We are taught to avoid people as there is the perception that they are bad.

What a great story! Thanks for sharing!

Shoot, I'd run a chainsaw all day if there was a bucket of food at the end!

Move to a barrio in Mexico, seems to be how it happens

that is so awesome! thanks for sharing about this voluntary transaction! ;)
