Rustic Braided French Loaf | Recipe

in food •  7 years ago  (edited)

Making bread can be a difficult process sometimes, depending on the style of bread you are making, it can go south very quickly. There is after all a reason they call it The Art of Bread Making… it is truly an art. There is a specific technique to it, you need to know what texture you are looking for..and when a bread has been kneaded enough. Once you conquer that technique, you open up the doors to being a master bread maker.

But what if you just want a simple and delicious loaf of bread, that you don’t have to spend all day making? Well, that’s where this recipe comes in. What? Did you guys really think I was going to show you some intense and complicated recipe? Oh come on, you should know me better than that by now!

Here is a simple recipe for a french style loaf of bread that is elevated to something special by a simple braiding technique. It can be made into a simple loaf as well, the braid just adds a bit of finesse. For this quick recipe I do like to use a stand mixer, letting it do the hard work for me, but it’s not necessary. When I’m not in a rush, I actually do prefer to do it by hand. So use what method works best for you.

The Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Warm Water
  • 5 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 3 tsp Dry Active Yeast
  • 1 tsp Salt

The Process

  • I like to always make a quick “starter” dough when making bread. It activates the yeast while also helping to make the whole process go a bit quicker and ending in a perfect texture.

  • I do this by adding the warm water to the bowl of a stand up mixer, add your honey, 2 cups of flour and combining. Then sprinkle your yeast over the top and let sit until your yeast activates, or until it starts to produce those lovely bubbles (about 5 minutes).

  • Once you see those bubbles, we will add in our oil, salt and 3 cups of flour.

  • Place bowl on mixer with dough hook attachment, and let the machine do the work for you. If the dough seems to wet, add in additional flour ¼ cup at a time until the dough comes together.

  • At this point I like to let the mixer knead the dough for about 2 minutes on low speed, then remove and place on a floured surface.

I then knead it by hand until it becomes a soft and smooth texture, bouncing back when pressed with your thumb. Cover with a towel and let rest until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

Because the technique of kneading bread is much easier to understand by seeing it done, here is a video by King Arthur Flour on how to properly knead dough.

Once your dough has rested and doubled in size divide it into 3 equal pieces and work into rounds.

Then, roll those 3 rounds into 3 long tubes of dough and wet the ends with water, pressing them together.

Next start to braid the dough pieces together, one over the other. When finished wet the ends and press them together as well.

Next place on cookie sheet and brush an egg wash mixture over the dough.

Now when making bread I don’t use the traditional egg wash, you know egg white and some water. Why not? Well for one, I then have an egg yolk I have to do something with. More than that though is the combination of the whole egg with a splash of milk adds a beautiful golden color to the bread that I really enjoy.

Place in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes until golden brown.

And there you go…impressive right? No one would ever guess this didn’t take you all day to make. Pair with your favorite dish, or just some butter… and enjoy!

We paired this bread with a recipe from @florio. He posted a detailed recipe for Homemade Tomato Sauce-Italian Recipe last week that we just had to try. It was delicious ! Thank you so much for sharing @florio, we really enjoyed it.

Thank you so much for reading,

This looks so delicious, I always find this kind of post near my lunch time, I may be hungry for the hour it is, but I blame you and your wonderful braided bread!

Thank you so much!! I will send bread to you immediately....just find some butter and you are set, instant lunch.

Feeling hungry right now, amazing content :)

Thank you so much! That means a lot coming from you!

Delicious 😋

Thank you!

Mmmm bread!
I have braided bread for a while now, git to try again some day.

Braided bread is just fancy, everyone should get on board. Thank you!

That finished loaf looks gorgeous and delicious. I just love bread. I am going to give this a try - looks amazing.

I made your recipe and it turned out lovely. I did notice one thing. You forgot to list the amount of oil you use in the ingredients list. I just poured in a healthy amount of olive oil and it was fine! As per usual we cut into it before it even cooled! :)

Oh my goodness I did!! Thank you so much for pointing that out...silly me. I normally do a healthy pour as well, about 1TBSP.

That looks amazing!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

I didn't have any eggs handy and it was storming out so I didn't feel like going out to the coop. I had to use a butter wash instead. I would have preferred your shiny golden crust.

A butter wash works perfect as well! The golden crust just makes it look nice, but butter makes everything better ❤

Thank you!!! Oh man, bread is one of my favorite things. It really is a very simple recipe and turns out beautifully every time. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you so much for your continued support...it is much appreciated.

So how much oil did you put in? It looks amazing by the way

I went ahead and edited the post, sorry about that! I add about 1Tbsp of olive oil.

Ah ok, thank you for the info 😁.

THat looks like challah bread! Beautiful! This I can do! Thank you!

Yes it does have a similar texture! Thank you so much, and yes...you can totally do this!! Let me know how it goes or if you have any questions along the way.

This is so cool, @llfarms, because I've been watching "The Great British Baking Show" and they braid the dough like this at times, I want to try it so badly! Love the way you create your instructions, in the way that even someone like me with little patience could follow through and not be frustrated! Thanks for sharing! ♥

Love that show!! I first tried this when I was selling loaves at our local farmers market, I thought it was an easy way to make a loaf of bread special. We seem to prefer it this way now, the texture is so fluffy and just perfect, not to mention showing up to a pot luck with it makes you look like a rockstar haha.

I always get frustrated with the instructions that are so hard to comprehend, I try to keep that in mind with every post I do. Thank you so much for noticing and for all the love!

I thought the yeast won't work in warm water, thank for the recipe @llfarm

Hey there! Actually yeast needs warmth to activate, but too hot and it will kill off the yeast. You're welcome and thanks so much for the support.

I keep talking about making bread or getting into bread making and all that...

Steemit, so far, has motivated me to get a lot of my back burner projects started and I think you hit the bread making right on the money for me, @llfarms... I wish I could try this recipe tonight, but I won't be home 'till very late!

Thank you so much for sharing and the motivation!!!!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I think steemit is so great to get us motivated to do those things too. Its so full of great people sharing such great information. ❤

Yea so many good people, it's true! You're welcome.
