Mushroom picking

in food •  6 years ago

In some countries, for example Czech Republic or Finland, it is common for people to go to the forest for picking mushrooms. During late summer and autumn everybody grabs baskets, knives and sometimes atlases (or apps, nowadays) to be able to distinguish less common kinds (or some people, like my parents, don't pick the ones they don't know at all).

There are, of course, people who don't eat mushrooms, but some of them still go mushroom picking and then they just give the mushrooms to their neighbors or family (my grandma does it like that).

When you meet people let's say in a train with a basket full of mushrooms, it is not unusual to start a conversation about where did they find them and to admire how big and nice the mushrooms are, share the best locations or complain that the weather is not quite good for mushrooms to be growing.

Is it common in your country or area to pick mushroom?
