Scotch Bonnet Chilli Coffee!

Chilli Coffee? Madness? Not at all!!

So you love coffee and you love chilli. Heck, why not combine them!!

I tell you, I have been making chilli coffee for years and it is awesome. I first made it by accident - I dry my own home grown chillis and grind them into various powders with my herb grinder. I also roast own coffee and grind the beans in the same grinder.

The naughty grinder in question

One time I noticed the coffee I was drinking had a familiar "nip" and I thought, oh no I didn't clean the grinder enough... Then I realised i was actually really enjoying the coffee!!

So I give to you, my very own scotch bonnet or habanero coffee recipe!!

You will need

A scotch bonnet or habanero pepper.
Some roast coffee beans

That's it!

Slice your pepper in half and toast slightly under a low grill for about twenty minutes until it is a little charred and utterly bone dry. Kinda like this.

Yummy and a bit smoky beautiful

Now obviously you don't want an insanely hot, barely drinkable coffee so we are quite sparing with how much we use in our coffee.

Break a piece off about the size of a coffee bean, maybe a little larger but don't go mad.. we still want a tasty lovely cup of coffee!!

Now wallop this along with a handful of beans into your grinder.

See my little toasted bit of scotch bonnet!!

Now whizz it up and they you go. Chilli coffee!!!

Now brew it up and enjoy that savoury finish with a lingering background burn

Yeah!!!

Texas mug optional :0)

Its a pleasure and thank you!!!

I'm not a coffee drinker myself, do you think this can work with tea? it sounds really interesting

It depends what kind of tea, the chilli has a slight smoked charred flavour which carries over into the coffee which I find is eminently suited to that. Regular or green tea it might not work well unless it was one of those oolongs or other dark brews . Perhaps a sencha? You have my mind on it now, I think I will give it a whirl and see!!

I started reading your post and i was thinking, should i add ají(how we call it here) to the tea? hmm when i try it i'll let you know

Please do!

Do you like the taste ?
I like coffee and love chili. Growing Habaneros, Bhut Jolokia and several other chilis my own and put it on nearly everything that's eatable. I also tried it in coffee but somehow i find this far from tasty :D
Thanks for sharing this.

I do but it took me a while to get the quantity and chilli right. At first I was terribly guilty of using to much and it was weird and frankly foul. Back then I dehydrated the chilli. But I kept trying and realised if I grilled it slightly too much so it has a bit of char and only use a very small amount then it is quite nice!

very nice - thanks for sharing fellow minnow!

A definite pleasure!

I'm just going to start throwing all sorts in there and see what I get! Great idea @meesterboom
