Here in South Africa we have grown up with a love of the outdoors. Sun, sea, all sports and especially any excuse to BRAAI.
We even have a national braai day. We braai anything and everything. No braai is complete without lots of MEAT served with many side items.
The word Braai is essentially South African slang. Its about being South African. It is a special time for us, as family and friends gather together for "chop and dop" (chop and alcoholic drink) this is our weekend national culture.
One side dish we love is called Roosterbrood...directly translated......toast.
It is so much more than that.
cooked this way the simple toasted sandwich is elevated to other levels. Try your favorite fillings or experiment with different combinations of meat, cheese, breads.
Make your own
Ingredients
1/4 cup of sugar
1 kg of cake flour
10 grams of instant dry yeast
lukewarm water
1 pinch salt
Method
Mix the dry ingredients together
Make a pool on top and add a little bit of the lukewarm water.
Knead the dough adding more water if needed
Put in a plastic container and seal, place container directly in the sun if possible
Rise for about 60 minutes
Roll in your hands small equal sized balls
Flatten into desired shape on a tray ready for the fire or use a grill.
Place on the fire (medium heat) grill, once the bottom side turns brown, flip it over
you will see the dough rising.
Try normal store bought slices of bread to make toasted sandwiches, truly delicious cooked this way
This is indeed the best way to spend time with friends, family and even a great way to make new friends on a camping weekend away.
