My all-time favourite hibachi or teppanyaki place is Gojo Japanese Steak House. This restaurant has been around for more than thirty-five years and is a very established local favourite.
Gojo serves traditional Japanese fare including beef, shrimp, chicken and scallops. The meal is accompanied with an exceptional yellow sauce. A friend told me that the yellow sauce is hollandaise and you can ask for as much as you like. It's simply delicious.
The restaurant is like a house with a number of rooms and rather dimly lighted lending an exotic or maybe eerie atmosphere. Dinner is prepared right before diners by Gojo chefs.
The menu includes a combination of mushrooms and oriental style vegetables cooked and seasoned with house special sauces. The meal comes with a soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, rice, and sherbet.
Like all American servings, the food portions are huge. At the end of your meal, the server will automatically distribute takeaway boxes and that famous yellow sauce. Everybody has some food to take home because there's just too much.
I have often seen diners not eating at all and the uneaten food is just packed to go. They just enjoy watching the chef manoeuvre his knife and cooking skills. The chef will entertain diners with flares of fire on the huge iron griddle. He would also flip pieces of food at the diners to catch with their mouth.
Gojo also operates a full service bar with a menu of specialty drinks. Reservations must be made weeks ahead as the restaurant is always full.
