A Delicious Kathiawadi Cuisine Meal with Friends

Nothing is more soulful than a traditional Indian meal. I was invited by a friend of mine to spend an evening with her couple of days back. I was in 2 minds to go or not,. She stays very far away, another end of the city, which would take me a hour and a half to reach. But then I could not refuse her as she is very dear to me. Anything for friends, right?

First, I went to her place and the evening we spent in chit chat. When girls come together then chit chats are never ending, how much ever time is there feeling less. It was the same with us, the whole evening flew off, feeling like it was matter of some minutes that we met. Later in the evening her hubby also came back from work and they decided that we would go out for dinner, to a Dhaba. A Dhaba is a food joint found on the highways on the outskirts of the city. They serve some very traditional foods depending on which part of the country they are in. The ones that we have just outside the city limits are a mix of different cuisine. There is one cuisine which is called as Kathiawadi cuisine. It comes from the state of Gujarat. This cuisine is on the spicier side and they use a lot of curd, buttermilk and lassi in their foods, which kind of mellows down the spicy effect.

I had absolutely no idea of this place and what food should I expect so I left completely on my friends to take decisions of what to order. They visit here regularly and for me it was first time. The one we visited is a complete vegetarian restaurant and I am not much into eating veg food so again selecting the dishes would also become difficult for me. This particular cuisine I have never had before. I was very excited, since the whole experience was new to me.

The place is not at all fancy, but they have good number of lightings done which gives a show to the place.

For a little show they have a water fountain at the entrance.

We all settle down to eat.

They started with serving us variety of pickles. There 7 type of pickles and I tried all of them a little. Except for one, which was very sour I liked all the others. My friend asked if I would like to get some packed, but I never enjoy that, once I go home, then I would never have. The fun is in enjoying in the moment.

Along with the pickles we were served butter milk. One of my favorites. Buttermilk is a very good digestive.

Here comes our main course. This is called the Kathiyawadi Rotlo. Basically, millet bread is broken into small pieces and then soaked into butter milk and then cooked with different spices. It was the yummiest dish of all. When it came, I felt that it was too much for us to finish and only 1 dish would be enough, but we managed to finish the whole dish and the other food also that we ordered. The food was yummy.

We ordered for one Ladyfingers dish; it was made in curd base. As I mentioned most of their dishes the base is curd and buttermilk. The other dish we ordered Corn mixed in fenugreek leaves. Corn and fenugreek leaves vegetables both are my favorite and it did good justice to the taste buds.

Along with it we were served Rotis made from millet and with white butter.

A Happy Me

I was stuffed and feeling heavy by the time I finished. Everything was so yummy that i hogged a lot. I was into food coma after this whole meal.
