33% of all food produced on Earth is thrown away to the bin

This post is inspired by @simonjay who have written an article about harm of sandwiches to ecology.
Couple weeks ago I found out that 33% of all food in the world is thrown away. For developed countries such as USA the percent is even higher. 40%! Just imagine that quantity.

How does it happen?

First, farmers have to throw away products looking bad or just different because shops need standard products meaning apples should have definite form and size.

Second, every shelf in the supermarket should be covered with products. They always buy more than can sell to create impression of consumer heaven. What happens with the rest of products? Yes, they are thrown away.

Third, we are used to visiting supermarkets once a week to buy food for next 7 days. They spoil in the fridge and we... throw it away. We are throwing into the bin up to 2000EUR (or USD) per year!

So what's the solution? It's obvious, I think...
