Pasties

in food •  7 years ago

I had a craving for some pasties but I didn't want to go through all the work of making dough and separately cooking the sausage. I came up with this short cut. BTW if you don't know what a pasty is they are like calzones. They are very popular in northern Michigan. We use to buy them from roadside stands.

INGREDIENTS

sausage
biscuit dough
onion
cheese

Butter or oil the pie pan so it won't stick to the bottom. If you wish, you can layer some biscuit dough on the bottom of the pan this way the pasty will be encased in bread once it's cooked. I don't do it this way because the bread will usually get stuck to the bottom of the pan.

Crumble the sausage and spread evenly in the pan. If you want it less greasy, pre cook the sausage and drain off the excess grease. Chop up the onions and cheese. I like it with larger cubes of onions so they don't cook away.

Cover the top with the biscuit dough. I brush on some butter so the top of the biscuits brown. You can also use an egg wash. Lastly bake it in the oven. I set the temperature to 325 degrees F. It takes about 20 or 30 minutes.

Lunch is ready. If you have never tried a pasty, you should.

From what I was told, these were eaten by the miners for lunch. They were a handy way to pack meat and potatoes in a convenient package. Their had carrots, onions, potatoes, meat and gravy. Thank you for reading.

So much information @outwalking thanks for sharing.

Thank for your comment. Honestly, this was the lazy mans version. The one they offer in restaurants are much more elaborate.
