CRAZY QUAIL EGG PRODUCTION!

in food •  7 years ago

These were a great addition to the homestead!

Sometimes, you just don't know until you try. Personally, I'm really glad we tried these quail out!

SO MANY EGGS

When we traded @armadillocreek a few rabbits for his non-jumbo quail, we weren't exactly sure what we were getting into. For us it was the fourth type of bird on our homestead, since we already had Muscovy Ducks, Chickens, and Guinea Fowl. However, although there may be some similarities between these four kinds of birds, they each have specific purposes too. Plus, we enjoy the variety.

We should have realized what we were in for when the quail were already laying eggs while we were driving home! In the video above, I pulled over after Monster Truck let me know that they were laying. Each day now we've got a small pile of quail eggs to gather in as well. With Guinea Fowl, Chicken, and Muscovy Ducks eggs too, we sure can make some interesting scrambled eggs.

Much like with our other eggs, we have both males and females, so the eggs can be fertilized. Once we are down on our land we hope to incubate some and see that next generation hatch. Also, we've been thinking about using some to make pickled quail eggs, which I've heard can be rather tasty too. This fresh food being produced every day on the homestead is exciting, and it's great to have the option to hatch more out too!

In case you were wondering, and if you missed it last time, here's the "Animals on the Homestead" video featuring the quail. In the near future we hope to produce an egg comparison video too, since there have been a few requests for that. We certainly have the eggs to compare anyway! Thanks @armadillocreek!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Nature is working with you and for you.
Keep on homesteading.

I’ve never had quail eggs before or knew there were prolific egg layers. Hmmm...considering adding quality to my livestock list. Easy to keep?

Hard-boiled quail eggs are delicious and nutritious! @papa-pepper, all you've been missing now is a big fish pond to raise some food fish or crabs.

Seen recently at an Amish store in Branson, MO...

My township is releasing Quail / Bob-White in park lands to eat ticks. Don't think it will help much.

Interesting. It could just be to feed the hawks, owl, foxes, and other predators.

This is egg-sactly the post I was looking for.

Great, everything looks very good quality, nothing like fresh food!! Greetings friend

in aceh we also keep quail, to be taken eggs and sold. while others have to be cut and sold to restaurants. the taste of the eggs is very delicious. but he said the quail is very sensitive to strangers entering the cage. will your quail place reduce the number of eggs? if visited by a stranger?

They are amazing, you know what else is good wild goose eggs! Still wanting to try a ostrich egg!

Yes! My Memere loves quail and quail eggs. At 93 years young she still goes quail hunting with my aunt :) Variety is a plus in so many ways; for ecosystem, for your nutrition and tastes buds, and for trading . Maybe quails would be good for smaller homesteaders with less space?

Very good point! Thanks!

Pickled eggs are really worthwhile and they last a long time too, but wait till you get to taste quail meat. Especially cooked with your homegrown peppers!

What a blessing! I can't wait until you butcher one and let us know how the meat is.

Musky ducks are beautifully hatching chicks. Under them you can lay down different eggs and thus raise a bird.

Congrats Papa, I was wondering when will you start raising quail :) How many birds did you get? I been raising quail for 2 years now and i love it, yes they are super productive! I even hatched their eggs which was quite an ordeal. Looking forward to your next quail post. enjoy the eggs! :)
